A Mayan monkey tail spiral design, often found on Classic Period (300–850 AD) polychrome ceramics, primarily symbolizes the mythological transformation of the Hero Twins' older half-brothers into monkeys. It represents a blend of punishment, artistry, and the cyclical nature of life.
The Popol Vuh Transformation: According to the Maya creation epic, the Hero Twins (Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué) tricked their arrogant older brothers, Hun Batz and Hun Chuen, into climbing a tree. The tree grew impossibly high, and when they tried to climb down, their sashes turned into tails. The spiral tail is a direct reference to this transformation moment.
Following their transformation, the monkey brothers became the divine patrons of artists, scribes, musicians, and sculptors. Therefore, the motif often signifies creativity and the arts.
The spiral itself, sometimes called Hunab Ku in this context, represents the continuous movement of energy, transformation, and the balance of the cosmos.

We don’t know if the young man seen on the front of this stela represented a young ruler or a god, but we can say that this was an important figure that would have been placed in the center of an ancient city as a focal point for religious ritual.
The piece is close to life-size. Its surface is elaborately incised, with most of the body’s “skin” covered in designs. Many of these designs may be recording body paint. Across the Huastec area, we find small ceramic rollers with similar designs. These rollers were likely used to apply paint to skin. Other symbols seen here may have been marked permanently on the body through tattooing and scarification. Many of these designs would have been painted in bright colors in the sculpture before us, but these colors have long ago faded.
We do not know what most of these symbols meant, but we do know that Mesoamericans greatly valued such decoration, for the practice was very ancient. Some of these symbols seem to locate the human or god in sacred space and time, suggesting a deeply religious function for the painting. Other symbols, such as the large ear ornaments worn by the young man, also identify the figure as a deity or a ruler.
The insights above do not explain the presence of the animated skeletal figure on the other side of the sculpture. If you look closely, you can pick out the outline of a rectangular form immediately behind this figure. This form probably represents cloth. Further, the skeletal figure is not a separate figure, but is attached to the back of the young man. It is probable that the young man was seen as carrying the skeletal figure on his back.

Often religious officials and rulers would carry the remains of revered ancestors on their backs, with the ancestor’s bones wrapped in a cloth bundle. Here the cloth bundle is unwrapped, revealing the skeletal figure inside. The Mexica (Aztecs) of Central Mexico, who flourished at the same time as the Huastec, even had a name for this office, teomama.

This phenomenal ceramic figure you see here is a part of the Jama-Coaque tradition from 1,400-2,300 years ago! While much of the culture remains elusive, their powerful ceramic figurines tell their stories to us today.

The Jama-Coaque people have an interesting history. They lived in modern-day Ecuador from around 550 B.C. until the Spanish conquered the area. However, they existed in different phases due to a volcanic eruption from the Guagua Pichincha volcano around 90 C.E. The volcano destroyed the area. Still, the culture endured and re-emerged 300 years later with the same craft traditions persevering. They are best known for their mold-made ceramic effigies depicting human figures such as warriors (like this one), hunters, musicians, and religious figures. The main center was San Isidro, which may indicate significant importance in reestablishing their civilization, whether it was because of the religion, region, or economy. These people could have passed on the center’s importance through oral histories and mythologies. These oral histories held the memory of the Jama-Coaque people.
The majority of these mold-made figures are interpreted to represent the shamanistic rituals and practices. The stylized figures depict vivid regalia such as textiles, jewelry, and large headdresses. Some figurines emphasize dynamic movement with kinetic adornments, such as nose rings. This warrior depicted shows an amazing costume with facial jewelry and a weapon, much like a Macuahuitl. It appears to be a club with five nodules on each side; presumably, if modeled after the Macuahuitl, each nodule was made of fine obsidian knives.
While we don’t see the pigment in the statue depicted here. Like other statues of this time, we can assume that it was painted to depict a life full of color, texture, and even sound! These important objects, like these ceramic molds, were passed down to be used almost as an heirloom, connecting history and generations.
