Scientists made a paper battery you can swallow to power internal medical devices
Scientists built a swallowable paper battery that can power medical devices inside the body and then gradually break down after its job is done. So far, the battery has been tested only in pigs, in which it powered devices for up to three days. If proven safe and effective in people, the battery could someday power temporary devices inside the gut while avoiding surgery to retrieve a conventional battery from the body when the device is no longer needed. "I'm very excited about this work," said Reza Ghodssi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Maryland who was not involved in the study. "The battery is one component that takes up most of the space in an ingestible device, so anything that can provide the required power while reducing the size of the capsule is very promising." Examples of ingestible medical devices include those that detect bleeding, dispense medicines, or stimulate specific tissues or organs. How does the battery work? Conventional batteries used in ingestible devices are not only large; they also need to stay sealed to prevent their internal materials from leaking into surrounding tissue and causing damage. The new battery, described Monday (Sept. 21)...

India flow battery player Delectrik talks 100MWh NTPC project award, targets gigawatt-hour order book
By 2024, the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) manufacturer was exporting to eight countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, the US, South Africa and Australia. Yet the company, completely self-funded, was still bootstrapped: “surviving based on margins on the products we were selling,” Mittal says. The answer was, again, about scale: this time, to pursue opportunities that brought the company’s focus back to India. Having built a low-cost battery technology, the next logical step was to close a first utility-scale contract. “That’s when we started focusing on the Indian market, because as an Indian company, directly going from small megawatt-hour to utility-scale contracts overseas is very difficult,” Mittal says. India also has an energy sector in which state-owned or partially state-owned companies supply about half of the grid’s electricity. It was a subsidiary of one of these, NTPC, that awarded Delectrik an initial 600kW/3,000kWh flow battery pilot in June 2024. NTPC had always sought alternative technologies to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and was “quite excited” to see Delectrik as an Indian company exporting advanced energy storage technology overseas, Mittal claims. The 3MWh, 5-hour duration system has now been in successful operation for close to a year at NTPC’s R&D centre, NTPC Energy...

Georgia Power's Robins Battery Storage achieves commercial operation helping to ensure ...
Georgia Power leaders recently joined state and local officials and leaders from Robins Air Force Base to celebrate the commercial operation of the Robins Battery Facility, a 128-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) located near Warner Robins, GA. The facility can deliver stored energy to the grid for up to four hours, enhancing grid reliability and flexibility. Paired with the nearby Robins Solar Facility, the battery system strengthens energy resilience and helps support Georgia's continued growth. Robins Air Force Base Col. Johari Hemphill, Sen. Larry Walker, Sen. David Lucas, Sen. Steven McNeel, Rep. Anissa Jones, Central Georgia Joint Development Authority Chairman James Vaughn, Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller and other community leaders joined Georgia Power executives to celebrate the commercial operation of the Robins Battery Facility. The event reflected the strong partnerships that helped bring the project to life and highlighted its role in strengthening Georgia's energy infrastructure while supporting economic growth and investment in Macon-Bibb County. “Seeing the Robins Battery Facility enter commercial operation is an important milestone for Georgia Power and for the future of energy in our state,” said Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer for Georgia Power. “By pairing battery storage with...

A consistency-oriented adaptive power allocation method for battery energy storage systems ...
With the continuous increase in wind and photovoltaic penetration, battery energy storage systems (BESSs) have become an important supporting resource for power balancing and flexible regulation in renewable energy stations. However, during the long-term operation of multi-cluster parallel battery systems, state-of-charge (SOC) inconsistency continuously accumulates owing to inter-cluster capacity differences, deviations in initial states, and operational nonuniformity. This accumulation further leads to unbalanced cluster responses, premature triggering of boundary constraints, and a reduction in the available regulation capability of the system. To address these issues, this study proposes a consistency-oriented adaptive optimal power allocation (COAO) method for seasonal wind–photovoltaic operating scenarios. First, daily operating feature vectors are constructed from annual wind power, photovoltaic, and load data, and fuzzy C-means clustering is employed to extract four typical operating scenarios corresponding to spring, summer, autumn, and winter, thereby establishing a unified cross-season evaluation framework. Second, for multi-cluster electrochemical energy storage systems, a consistency-oriented mathematical model is developed that incorporates cluster-level SOC dynamics, SOC safety boundaries, power constraints, ramp-rate constraints, and a directional exit mechanism. Furthermore, a cluster-level priority scoring function is constructed by comprehensively considering direction-related SOC margins and capacity differences, and adaptive weight adjustment together with feasible-region optimization correction is introduced...
