It seemed that she walked forever before the magic mirror warned her that she’d reached her destination. When she looked around, she was deep into the field, crowded in by tall green stalks. She heard panting nearby though, reminiscent of dog. She followed the sound to the edge of a clearing. Xipe Totec knelt in the black dirt, clutching the base of a wooden pole. Unlike the poles his victims were once bound to, this one had a cross bar, reminiscent of the wooden crucifixes that loomed over the pulpit of every Catholic church she’d ever had the misfortune of visiting. And like those gruesome artifacts, this one had a twisted, mutilated body attacked to it by its wrists, made from maize husks and old faded burlap sacks rather than carved from dark wood or alabaster. The maize god himself was a horrific sight. The skin he’d worn as clothing was completely gone, but his own skin now peeled off him in tattered rags. Only clumps of his long black hair remained on his head; the rest lay in the dirt, decaying. His hands were gnarled claws of muscle and tendons—even his fingernails had fallen out—and when he turned to look at her over his shoulder, he stared back at her with grotesquely round orbs, the muscles attached to them flexing and squirming as his eyes moved. The only remaining skin on his face was on his cheeks and the bridge of his nose—the rest of which was mostly gone, exposing the sharp edge of the nasal bones underneath. His shriveled lips left his teeth bared like a mummy’s. He did have one ear left, though that too fell off when he caught it on his shoulder as he turned his head away from her.
