On this day in history. The Declaration of Arbroath, probably the most important and influential document in Scottish history and considered by UNESCO to be of world significance, was dated 6 April 1320: making it 706 years old today. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Arbroath
The Declaration of Arbroath. The image shows a replica of the declaration on display in a Perspex box. It is a large single sheet with closely spaced lines of writing at the end furthest from the viewer. At the near end it is cut into multiple vertical strips, each of which has a red or black wax seal on it. AT the bottom of the image is an interpretive panel giving background to the declaration.

The beautiful, and surprisingly extensive, remains of Arbroath Abbey in the heart of Arbroath in Angus. The abbey was founded in 1178 by King William I for a group of Tironensian monks previously resident at Kelso Abbey. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Arbroath #Angus
Arbroath Abbey. The image shows a low pinkish stone square foundation in the foreground, set amongst grass with other low foundations stretching back from it. In the distance are the imposing ruins of the abbey, rising to considerable height and made of pinkish stone. The sky is blue.

The shoreline at tranquil Auchmithie, some three miles north-east of Arbroath in Angus. This is the original home of the smoked haddock known as the Arbroath Smokie. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Auchmithie #Arbroath #Angus
Auchmithie, some three miles north-east of Arbroath in Angus. The image shows a bay facing right out to sea. There's a track leading into the picture behind the bay and this can be seen to climb grassy cliffs that are on the far side of the bay and behind it. There are two buildings behind the bay. The scene is in patchy sunlight.

On this day in history. The Battle of Arbroath was fought between supporters of the Ogilvy and Lindsay families over claims on the administrative control of Arbroath Abbey on 24 January 1446 (or 1445). 600 are said to have been killed. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Arbroath
The image shows the ruins of Arbroath Abbey stretched out in reddish stone in the middle ground, with towers on the left and the remains of a transept on the right. The foreground is largely grassy with low level remains of more of the abbey in the grass. The scene is in sunshine and the sky is blue.
