Belleville Shooting Suspect Had Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories During Military Service, Sources Say

The Belleville shooting suspect, Sean Ward, who was accused of opening fire at police outside an Ontario synagogue, reportedly spouted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic while serving in the Canadian army, according to military sources. Ward, a 29-year-old corporal in the Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was discharged in June 2022 after refusing to get vaccinated against the virus. Military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Ward had expressed a range of false conspiracy theories, including blaming Jews for the pandemic—a meme commonly spread by extremists during the pandemic. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when Ward, armed with a shotgun, arrived near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, around 7 p.m. During Yom Kippur, a holy Jewish holiday, worshippers were inside the synagogue while police were monitoring a suspicious vehicle that had been reported a week earlier.
