Yesterday, I was quite pleased to get this side by side comparison shot of Hairy and Downy woodpeckers on my new birch log suet feeder. #birds #Bobsbackyard #Ancaster #HamOnt

Both females, a hairy woodpecker on the left side and the much smaller downy woodpecker on the right side of a birch log suet feeder. Their markings are virtually identical. However, the hairy has a significantly larger beak in proportion to its head size than the downy has.
