Indonesia, A Nation No More Following the assassination of M.H. Lukman and Sudisman, two communist officials, Indonesia fell into a civil war (1965-1970). Originally, the conflict was between Army loyalists (ABRI) and the leftist People's Army of Indonesia (PAI). However, it degenerated into separatist wars outside the Javanese domain. ABRI units in Sulawesi became entrenched in warlordism. South Moluccas returned from exile. Jakarta lost legitimacy of Papua. In Halmahera, the local ABRI commander defected to the Ternatean monarchy. By 1969, the conflict became stuck in a bloody stalemate. Fearing overextension, especially due to the ongoing Vietnam War, the US refused to support the ABRI any further. The USSR rejected to support the communists as the PAI were vehemently anti-revisionist. China struggled to support the Viet Cong, let alone the larger PAI. Meanwhile, Indonesian nationalists were driven out of Atjeh and eastern Indonesia. Collateral deaths aside, half a million civilians died from deportations and summary executions. In 1970, all sides signed the Singapore Agreement, ending the war. ABRI and PAI were reluctant, unlike the separatists. The 1945 Republic was dissolved, replaced by the anti-communist ISRI and communist IDR, as well as the recognition of the sovereignties of the separatist states. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, there were hopes that Indonesia might reunify. In 1990-1991 ISRI and IDR began talks in Tunis for that matter, but it was all but a wishful thinking. Representatives from the eastern states were quick to shoot down the idea, as ISRI-IDR wanted the whole of the 1945 Republic. The Republic of Indonesia is all but a bittersweet memory at this point.
