FAO strengthens agricultural statistics across Africa to support better decisions on food and ...
Accra, Ghana – Reliable agricultural data is helping African countries make better decisions on food security, agricultural development and sustainable agrifood systems. During the 2024–2025 biennium, the FAO Regional Office for Africa expanded technical support across the continent, helping countries strengthen agricultural statistics, improve national data systems and build the evidence needed for policy and investment. Working across 47 African countries, the FAO Regional Office for Africa supports governments to collect, analyse and use agricultural data through national agricultural censuses and surveys, Food Balance Sheets, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) monitoring and statistical capacity development. These efforts help countries generate the information needed to monitor national priorities, regional commitments and global development agendas. During the biennium, FAO supported: 24 countries to conduct national agricultural surveys through the 50x2030 Initiative, expanding the availability of high-quality agricultural data. 16 countries to prepare or implement national agricultural censuses, strengthening the foundation for long-term agricultural statistics. 15 countries to compile national Food Balance Sheets, providing comprehensive information on food availability, dietary energy, proteins, fats and other nutrients to support food security and nutrition planning. 18 countries to strengthen monitoring and reporting of agriculture-related Sustainable Development Goal indicators. Multiple countries through technical training and capacity development...

FAO Strengthens Agricultural Data Collection and Analysis in Africa
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is helping African countries improve agricultural data collection and analysis to support better decisions on food security, agricultural development and sustainable agrifood systems. During the 2024–2025 biennium, the FAO Regional Office for Africa expanded its technical assistance across 47 countries, strengthening national statistical systems and improving the quality of information used for policymaking and investment. Reliable agricultural data plays an important role in helping governments understand production trends, food availability and rural development needs, allowing them to plan more effectively and respond to emerging challenges. Support Expands Across 47 Countries Over the two-year period, FAO supported 24 countries in conducting national agricultural surveys through the 50x2030 Initiative, improving the availability of high-quality agricultural data. Another 16 countries received assistance in preparing or implementing national agricultural censuses, creating a stronger foundation for long-term agricultural statistics. The organisation also helped 15 countries compile Food Balance Sheets, which provide detailed information on food availability, dietary energy, protein, fats and other nutrients. These datasets support national planning for food security and nutrition while helping governments monitor changes in food supply. Better Data for National Planning FAO worked with 18 countries to improve the monitoring and reporting of agriculture-related...

Cultivating Safety: The Role of Sound Agricultural Practices in Sustainable Food Systems
Food safety and food security are often mentioned together, yet they refer to two distinct but closely connected challenges. Food safety ensures that food is free from contamination, harmful residues and other hazards, while food security means that everyone has reliable access to sufficient, nutritious and affordable food. The two are inseparable. Access to food has little value if that food is unsafe to eat. Building safe, resilient food systems therefore requires the collective commitment of everyone in the agricultural value chain – from farmers to policymakers and consumers. It calls for continuous innovation, collaboration and, above all, responsible farming practices season after season. Farmers play a central role in protecting both consumer health and the long-term sustainability of food production. By adopting smart crop protection practices alongside responsible land management, they can safeguard their harvests while protecting the natural resources on which future production depends. The result is safe, high-quality food for consumers and healthier soils, cleaner water and stronger biodiversity for the seasons ahead. Modern agriculture is evolving rapidly. Precision agriculture, digital technologies, biological solutions and resilient crop varieties enable farmers to protect crops more effectively while using fewer, more targeted inputs. Achieving food safety and security depends...
