DOLLAR GENERAL EXEC, at GS conference: “.. even that middle to upper middle is acting more like a lower income shopper .. we’re hearing more and more from them: ‘I don’t feel like I’m higher income at $100,000 any longer because of all of the headwinds ..” $DG

Closed out my #$DG position today, sized at 10% for a 2 month gain of 24%. (Roth IRA) What's attractive at one price, isn't as much at another.

With retail reporting largely complete, picture of healthy consumer with most improvement at lower end & apparel strength. But shows how much Nike troubles are dragging on sporting goods retail globally at time of relative plenty. $NKE $ADDYY $DKS $DG $DLTR $BBY $WSM $URBN $ROST

Oof. ☠️. That mirage-like Footlocker turnaround drags down another high flier after Mary Dillion as Dicks warns. But $DKS is cutting outlook for core brand too as Nike struggles drag on industry across-board driving higher promotions & lower margin. $NKE $ULTA $ADDYY

McDonald's here continues to describe low-end as pressured & declining. Fair to say $MCD has been more dour on this demo than most for a while now. This Q, $V $COF $SYF with much broader view of this consumer have cited no step-down & if anything improvement. $XLY $XLF $WMT $DG

Supermarkets back to dark old days of not growing sales & margin at same time. Kroger cuts sales guide 100bp as share loss to Walmart, Amazon & the dollar stores resumes. Only have themselves to blame for having once again let price gaps go too far. $KR $ACI $WMT $AMZN $DG $DLTR $TGT

Another strong Q at Dicks despite struggles at Nike, JD etc highlighting $DKS has morphed into a MUCH stronger business post COVID. I’m just surprised none of these retailers is using Iran to sandbag outlook. US retailers rarely pass up on that chance. $DG $TGT $XRT $XLY

"Our customers continue to report that their financial situation has worsened over the last year” (impacted by inflation) "Many […] report that (they) only have enough money for basic essentials, with some noting that they have had to sacrifice even on the necessities.” CEO #$DG

Didn't realise that Walmart has faced a mix headwind from basics outpacing discretionary goods for as many as 18 quarters. That's 6 years! And kinda flies in the face of $WMT is cautious on consumer talk. 😮 $TGT $AMZN $DG $DLTR

Visa & Bank of America highlight resilience of US consumer in face of everything thrown at them. While $V disputes K-shape, citing decent spend even at low end, both $V & $BAC see solid credit quality across income cohorts. $MA $AXP $XLF $XLY $WMT $TJX $AMZN $DG

Synchrony Financial says not seeing any signs of consumer weakness - in fact seeing business strengthening likely boosted further by tax refunds. Holiday focused spend at +4% even stronger than reported 3% purchase volume growth rate. $SYF $COF $XLY $XLF $WMT $LOW $V $MA $DG $DLTR

$WMT & $ stores claim higher income shoppers trading down (grocers ARE losing custom on pricing). Dollar General CEO says $100K+ income 'don't feel I'm higher income'. But even $DG compelled to cite 'resilient' consumer (& it sells to some very low income demos). $KR $DLTR $ACI

'Relative' weakness at food & drug stores (being eaten alive by $WMT, $DG, $DLTR & $AMZN), department stores (as usual) & furniture (although much better than recent trend. August was a very strong month. Again watch what folks do, not what they say... $M $KSS $DDS $KR $ACI

US retail sales ex autos/gas up very strong 5.6% y/y. Sheer breadth - every category up, even furniture after long run of weakness. Online stole show again +10% but very discretionary areas strong like eating out, electronics, sporting. 🔥🔥 $XLY $XRT $XLF $AMZN $WMT $WSM $BBY
