Land for housing and slum transformation

Land for housing and slum transformation

Access to adequate housing and sustainable urban development is a fundamental driver of social equity and economic growth. However, many cities in the Arab region face challenges such as urban sprawl, informal settlements, and inadequate housing, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, population growth, and displacement. Addressing these issues requires innovative land governance solutions, urban planning strategies, and the use of modern technologies to transform slums and create inclusive, livable cities. Strengthening land administration systems and adopting environmentally sustainable approaches are critical steps toward ensuring equitable urban development. This session will explore transformative solutions for land management and housing, focusing on innovative practices and case studies from the region. It will feature an analysis of land administration reforms and urban area redevelopment efforts in Djibouti, showcasing how policy and planning can revitalize urban spaces. The session will also delve into the importance of geographic information systems (GIS) in population and housing censuses, emphasizing their role in enhancing environmental statistics and urban planning. A case study from Muscat, Oman, will examine how land distribution laws have contributed to urban sprawl, offering insights into legislative approaches for managing growth more effectively. Additionally, the session will explore spatial planning and land management strategies tailored for protracted displacement in dryland regions, highlighting the role of nature-based solutions in addressing the unique challenges of these areas. Through these discussions, the session aims to provide practical insights into integrating land governance, spatial planning, and innovative technologies to support housing access, transform informal settlements, and promote sustainable urban development across the region.

Periodic reminder that the US is a global laggard when it comes to building new transit lines, even compared to our N. American neighbors. Nearly every major city in Canada is building multiple transformative transit extensions, @rmtransit.bsky.social writes. nextmetro.substack.com/p/….

It would be nice to get some reasonable, sober commentary from the city about why it thinks traffic deaths are down this year, but it's just rah-rah. DOT's press release lists some possible factors, but it's mostly the usual laundry lists @nyc.streetsblog.org

Traffic fatalities are down and the DOT is taking a victory lap — even as it argues against a protected bike lane in court.

This story paints a pretty positive picture of fare-free transit, which some riders and operators like. But it offers no evidence that dropping fares reduces driving/pollution -- likely because there isn't any. Also, note that big transit agencies are opposed. They know they can't afford it.

Free buses are doable, but is it the best path forward? We can address transit affordability by improving fair fares. We can speed up the bus with bus lanes, stop consolidation, signal priority, etc. Love that the bus is in the paper, now let's get a better policy: www.nytimes.com/2025/07/0….
