I don’t really have words to explain how it feels to see Kristi Noem standing on a street in East LA that looks like the street I grew up on in East LA with an invading military force trying to kidnap people who look like the neighbors I grew up with. It stays with you, spiritually.
I’ve seen a lot of hand wringing about the dangers of going to No Kings protests and gently, I want to tell people to chill a little. These are permitted marches and the point is to be out there and seen en masse. Please don’t scare off people who are maybe going to their very first protest
If you can't attend the rallies today for whatever reasons, something useful you can do is scour your local news outlets for coverage and share the coverage on social media and pump it out to all of your networks. Amplify what's happening locally so others in your communities are aware.
I can't tell you how invigorating and inspiring and hopeful it is to be in a crowd of people who also care. Took a group of teens to the last big protest and they were most struck by no longer feeling alone. If you're able to go, I encourage you to try. Get a group of friends & go together.
A friend just texted to congratulate me on a forthcoming project, about which she learned from ChatGPT. Never mind that I am ... not currently writing a book on the divine feminine... ? Again, again, again: AI is bad and wrong and won't give you accurate info, friends. It's not a search engine.
My mother, who does not attend protests, is going to a No Kings event in her area. She's an older woman with debilitating health problems, so this is a big outing for her. For the people acting like these events might be scary, my 67-year-old mom with arthritis and COPD is attending. You'll be fine.
From Rabbi @marisaelana.bsky.social: May Iranians, who mostly hate their leaders, be safe. May Palestinians, who mostly hate their leaders, be safe. May Israelis, who mostly hate their leaders, be safe. May all the war-mongering authoritarians be deposed & may they [yet] experience real justice..
While ICE kidnaps families, Israel wipes them out. “A poem by a young Iranian poet Parnia Abbasi who, along with her family, all civilians, was killed today in a brutal and unlawful Israeli attack in the Sattarkhan neighbourhood of Tehran.” www.pamenarpress.com/post/parnia-...
It's ok to be wrong. Holding on to bullshit just so you don't have to admit that to yourself is unhealthy. It's especially OK to change your mind about political views you held when there is evidence to contradict what you thought. Trump is in fact a fascist. You can say so.
I have this neighbour who basically spends his whole day walking around the area looking for things in other peoples yards that he thinks will lower his property value to complain about and has decided the height of my front lawn is today's item and this is going to be fun, I needed a distraction
Just saw a video on the front of @latimes.com about a man born and raised in East LA who got stopped by the federal gestapo and he showed them his Real ID and they stole it, took it & didn’t give it back Then they walked off like a violent gang with their giant ass guns in the middle of the street
I actually don't think it's accurate to say 'Trump isn't releasing Mahmoud even though the court said he had to' Trump isn't releasing Mahmoud *because the court *didn't actually say he had to The judge could & should have done so, but didn't I'll explain storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Y’all I don’t want to be rude but there is no one-size-fits-all rule to protest and you should ignore anyone/any meme that says otherwise. Protest is a practice. You learn as you go, and it makes sense to start within your comfort zone. Watch the people around you, stay alert and use your judgment.
the best posters have locked accounts and no followers. they post from the rarest of air and their posts are only knowable by intuition. compared to them we are all barely posting at all, stuck in likes-land, over here in the on-deck circle getting ready to post
"After the accident, the crowd gathered around the scene, according to the video stream. The two agents got out of the crashed car, seemingly panicked and, witnesses told The Intercept, appearing to avoid eye contact with bystanders. The agents got into another HSI vehicle."
the problem with "echo chamber" as metaphor is that echoes produce new sounds and resonances. you just need harmonious tones to make those new sounds and resonances something you actually wanna hear. good sounds echoing produce overtones: new sounds consisting of resonant tones. Good, Actually!
“Becker argues that the only way to break free of these visions is to see them for what they are: a convenient excuse to continue destroying the environment, skirt regulations, amass more power and control, and dismiss the very real problems of today to focus on the imagined ones of tomorrow.”
Anyway, cities are great. The main issue is that they need to be affordable. I think that NYC has lost some of its pride of place over the past 2 decades. A lot of the transplants don't actually love the real city and so they don't mind politicians who hate it.
my feeds are split between people in the US discovering that William of the Windsors had a good friend who was an Indian origin billionaire, people in the UK being shocked that the guy died suddenly, and people in India thinking it's hilarious that he choked on a bee
Grateful to @truahrabbis.bsky.social for teaching this important classical midrash: "God created the first human being out of dust from the four corners of the earth [because], every place a person goes, a part of them is from there and a part of them is returning there.”
And this is covered in the thread, but a major part of the reason that other countries accept the small minority is that those people don’t overlap with a targeted ethnic/religious minority. In a homogenous society, people are more likely to accept that some of us are just Like That
"Per the study, one glaring safety gap is the bots' inability to respond appropriately to users clearly at risk of self-harm or suicide." Trump's budget bill, currently in the Senate, would impose a 10-year moritorium on AI regulation. They have so little regard for human life.
