if you tell me "A is a bully on social media(/in print, in whatever specific scenario) but very pleasant elsewhere" you are roughly 50x likelier to convince me that they have the additional vice of cowardice than you are to convince me that they have a hidden virtue of kindness
coming out against taco trucks is the caliber of self-imposed destruction with very few rivals. I'm thinking Pharaoh in the Book of Exodus, General Custer, Division General Leclerc. Sun Tzu wrote a whole book about not giving your opps this much to work with
I love when people call me a Luddite. MRNA vaccines? Inject that content into my muscles. Solid state batteries? Fuck yeah let's scale that shit and get it out there. Agrivoltaic breakthroughs marrying plants and technology? LET'S GO, power + plants is specifically my jam.
every so often you'll see a video of some incredibly drunk person not being allowed on the plane and then I think that there's someone on that flight with an empty seat next to them who thinks they got lucky and has no idea how lucky they actually got
Because I am a writer and editor and my partner is extremely analog and a visual artist, absolutely nothing about our lives would be improved by a subscription to an LLM. I cannot conceive of any task in my life that could be helped by opening ChatGPT. I’m even open to suggestions.
I talked with @gilduran.com about the bizarre fixations and political fantasies of tech billionaires like Peter Thiel, and how those ideas are being translated into real-world governance. We also discussed Silicon Valley’s Christian cosplay and the corporate fiefdoms tech moguls hope to build.
last Thursday was the first time in over 15 years that American prisons executed 3 people on the same day i did a lil digging and was confused at first to find that executions are at a modern high, even tho public support for the death penalty is at a modern low ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
Wow. (HT @ravmike.bsky.social) --the people starting Israel decided not to call it "Palestine" because THEY ASSUMED THERE'D BE A PALESTINIAN STATE CALLED PALESTINE RIGHT THERE IN A MINUTE + they didn't call it Zion because THEY ALREADY KNEW THE WORD ZIONISM HAD BAD CONNOTATIONS WITH PALESTINIANS
One of my either virtues or failings as an artist, depending on how you look at it, is my refusal to embrace any niche or single identity. The second somebody says “he’s the guy who does this,” I want to do something else. But if my brand were “brutalist ghost stories” then i might feel different
I have had two experiences in my life—one with an oral surgeon, one with a vet—where I just get a call after a visit, directly from the doctor, that’s like “I just wanted to see how things are going.” It is hard to overstate how helpful that can be and how much I appreciate it.
I think it says something that we have seen the adoption of surveillance technology alongside the growth of policing and police budgets. These technologies are quite often pitched as a way to create frictionless policing but incidents of police violence have largely remained static after rising yoy
Dad is currently basking in the fact he's rid of the little shit and will be inconsolable the whole drive back while mom will call twice in the first 10 min after leaving over socks or some shit and then spend the rest of the journey blissfully planning what to do with the extra time in her day
In India we handle it by putting every kid in the country in a 20 year cycle of annual battle royales where the winners go to the next year then after 12 years of schooling they ramp up the difficulty and you better be in the top 10 percentile nationally or forget a college anyone's ever heard of
I'm still finding out about these folks but @freepress.bsky.social (no, not Bari Weiss's outlet!), @rebuildlocalnews.bsky.social, and several unions including @newsguild.org @wgaeast.bsky.social and @nwu.org are all organizations pushing for structural changes to our information environment.
I use "transphobic" and "homophobic" in writing and conversation. Often they're accurate, but I've never felt fully comfortable with either as a blanket explanation. In some people, hatred is at the very root of their identity and self-definition; it's not simply a symptom of fear.
My issue with this is that they’re stewing in a cesspool of “race science,” Nazis, persistent degradation of marginalized genders, reactionary politics, and CSAM, and their focus is on not being yelled at for pro-AI views that can be curated via aggressive muting and blocking tools.
this story has: abolitionism (in 2026, if the pundits can believe it), trans organizing for hunger strikers in ICE facilities, criminalization over targeting Flock cameras at Trans Pride as part of the fight against mass surveillance, LGBTQ history and its modern resonances—what more could you want?
I have been writing and reporting stuff that cannot be done by AI and also talking to other journalists about work that cannot be done by AI. I feel like if I published this list, a bunch of people would just say, "we can't afford to do that kind of work anymore, or be willing to pay for it".
two of the friends in my college housemates group chat are on a whale watching expedition this week and I, a person who just finished INTO THE DROWNING DEEP by Mira Grant, am now full of helpful tips for avoiding terror at sea (such as “if you see mysterious lights in the water GET THE BOAT AWAY”)
extremely tiring to see pundits and Bluesky devs and everyone else yell about "the left" doing something because they're mad somebody their friends follow on social media posted a hot take they don't like. please find a real problem, I have suggestions if you can't think of one
So besides the obvious quip— Uh no taco trucks on every corner is the GOAL — & classism (+ implicit other isms) I am so struck by the diff bw this tone (ew bad yuck) & Mamdani’s “what good things people deserve / how I will get it to them”. Did not every politician pay close attention ?!?
"Students are prohibited from wearing [...] bedroom shoes, bonnets, or (do rag) to class or the cafeteria" not that I would wear my bonnet to the cafeteria, but I know I'd be so annoyed if there was a rule saying I couldn't lol like what if I was up early and hungry! www.al.com/news/2026/08...
I know I shared this last night, but watch the second angle: puts one foot on the fence to push himself up. Then grabs the railing with one hand. (All while tracking the ball!) Then gets an assist from the hero in the blue shirt who pulls fully away so he has room. Pulls it down. Baseball rules.
“The conditions on the ground — widespread violence, mass displacement, acute hunger, and the collapse of essential services—are precisely the type of extraordinary and temporary circumstances that TPS was created to address,” Bera wrote in the letter,”
some movers who seemed to feel they had been wronged unloaded a bunch of furniture onto the street near my apartment yesterday and started smashing it with hammers. I asked them to stop and they started screaming at me. about five minutes later the cops came and made them clean up the entire thing
I'm in the semi awkward position on this where I don't buy a lot of the research findings but also don't really care too much, as credible messengers receive only a fraction of the resources that cops get, and we might as well keep trying everything we can to keep violence at record lows
Also, almost all of these people must be rich, white, cis, straight men or some insulated combo thereof because of all the ways your peace can be disturbed on the internet, saying that “pro-AI” is not suitably embraced on a website is the most cowardly-ass shit I’ve ever heard
