Frank Sinatra almost got into a fist fight with Bing Crosby on the set of High Society to defend the dignity of Louis Armstrong, who was added to the production due to Sinatra’s advocacy. It’s not hard to find PSAs for tolerance that Sinatra filmed!
maybe given the current political situation, finding things about which to say “the president has a point” is not only not a good look but actively bad and fucked up? Maybe maybe resist the impulse to say “well I agree with this chump” and find something else to talk about instead?
I've been saying this for a year now: the Democrats have missed a gigantic political opportunity--and, at this point, have failed in an ethical obligation--to create a shadow-government health department that dispenses medically accurate information, guidance, and advice.
I cannot stress enough that is some rando responds to something you reposted trying to draw you into a “but have you considered” discussion of it, they are not acting in good faith, and you just block. Please, embrace the blue sky way. block. block. block.
I am embarrassed to have an opinion about what a director I’ve only seen I think 3 movies by said on a podcast but every time I’ve ever seen Matthew Lillard in a movie I’ve enjoyed it; giving props to work you like rules over being catty and rude, & people who think catty and rude is good are bores
Pardon power is not the problem. More people should be freed from this vicious system. Corruption and organized crime as governance are the problem. Shady pardons are just one symptom of the much larger clusterfuck we're in. If you zoom in too much on any detail as "the problem," you lose the plot.
A friend saw several of these ornaments in a thrift store, still in their original packaging & texted me. I didn't see his message, and he didn't know if I already had one/would want it, so he hid it behind the display, so I could come find it if I wanted it. My partner retrieved & bought it today.
Sadly, this appears to be AI. There are some tells throughout (hands disappearing, the people in the background staring like collective zombies, some weird configurations on the walls) but overall, this looks pretty real -- it's getting harder to tell what's real and what's not. Which ain't great.
I think all of the following things: 1) that some degree of violent conflict is inevitable because thousands of ICE combatants will not peacefully submit to judgment for their crimes; 2) that we should try to minimize violence as much as possible, because it will be horrible; and
The trajectory of UK politics after the Labour Party’s landslide victory in 2024 is obviously not a clean analog to what might have happened had Harris squeaked by Trump, but it’s certainly evocative. Recall that Senate Dems celebrated Trump’s inauguration by passing the Laken Riley Act.
I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Lina. Lina was forced to flee South at the beginning of the war with her sons Hasan, 10 and Mahmoud, 4, leaving her husband. She found out she was pregnant with Liza she gave birth alone and when she returned her home was destroyed.
As an anti-Trump voter, the only critique of the Democratic Party that I am interested in right now is that they are not doing absolutely everything possible to put themselves between this regime and the people harmed by it Take that “crossover” appeal and shove it where the sun don’t shine
the first time I saw “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was the 4k directors cut on a big movie screen and it was literally a spiritual experience about how space is so big and we are so small and yet our small little lives full of friendship and love are so important
"Smuggling"? Welcome to the new and worthless CBS News under Bari Weiss. Even the story itself says Harris was arrested with a tiny amount of the drug, which was for personal use. He's been in custody for 3 weeks now. This is horrific. www.cbsnews.com/news/jeremy-...
Once when I was kid, in Maryland, some New York fam called like 'hey we're thinking about visiting soon, that cool?' Our parents said 'oh nice sure' NY fam replied 'cool, we just pulled onto the driveway' As a child, I was hype for the surprise... As an adult?? 5 surprise people in my house?? 😅
Sometimes I view the surprise or shock at how bad Trump and Republicans are or how supportive white voters are as a symptom of this ignorance. Very recently—in living memory—it was normal to publicly suggest that Black people were incapable of independent thought or self-government.
the "I volunteered to host a condo holiday open house and now a horde of neighbors who skew 65+ are coming over tomorrow and everything has to be perfect" playlist has landed we're going for recognizable carols with maximum snow and minimal Jesus that are neither too mellow nor too raucous
I've known Matt DeMateo for almost 20 years and I am so glad to see the work of New Life Centers uplifted: www.nytimes.com/2025/11/30/o... - Matt is the real deal and he would be the first to refuse to be pedestaled. But he really is a singular human being. Chicago is lucky to have him.
One complicated thing about Netflix/WB is that Ted Sarandos, although he is the public face of antipathy to the theatrical experience, is not especially high on the list of those who've undermined and damaged it. I'd rank him 4th, after studios, theater owners, and people who quit going to movies.
Controversially, I don't think that if social media had existed that Montgomery could have lasted as long as it did. Bad actors and human nature would have spread negativity, trafficked in gossip, and torn down the leaders in ways that they could not do in 1955/56.
