I'm a broken record on this so I'll just say again that you should take every opportunity to [if you can] gather with other people who are trying to do constructive things in the world. Attend the zine fairs, the craft circles, the workshop sessions, food distros, people's assemblies, all of it.
People also need to understand this isn’t federal money, this is DC money collected through DC taxes. They’re openly stealing from the city with the intent to immiserate the people living there because they resent the idea they should be allowed to govern themselves.
“I was one of the critics that sat on the side and made the decision there was only two genders, so I got an education that was unbelievable. And I don't know just exactly how to say this but my perspective for people have changed [...] I’d like to apologize" good things still happen sometimes 🥲
Well comrades, times are hard and we keep pushing. Everyone is right to be furious. Where are the most vulnerable people in your local communities? How can you be in solidarity with them during these hard times? There's a lot to do. Take some time to regroup and then get back to work.
Even if you agree with Schumer that voting for cloture was the lesser of two evils, he handled this with such total ineptitude, in a way that could not have angered and demoralized Democratic voters more if it had been designed to, that it's impossible to justify his leadership role.>
it's too grim to write down but we just lived through the moment when a sitting u.s. president said in a speech at the dept of justice that he thinks news gathering has to be illegal, as covered by a far right tv network, with an ad for "angel cream" placed next to his head
ONE PERSON is responsible for a huge # of book challenges in SC. ONE PERSON is responsible for 40% of book challenges in FL. (His name is Bruce.) A single voice absolutely makes a difference. Use yours and raise it for good. For god's sake, are you going to let fucking Bruce run the show?!
Logging off since it's almost time to break fast. A reminder to those who may need it that people are in motion everywhere and will continue to be. If you're not already joining in, find your place and join. The more the merrier. Take care, everyone. Good night.
Every time I wrote about my home state, readers would just be like "F-- Texas, throw the state away", not realizing that what I was trying to do was show them what was going to happen nationwide. That money is king, that people, yes, are cowards, and that "rules" are made to suit the powerful.
Trying not to be bitter about being yelled at for years about how bad I was for saying the Democratic Party was completely ill equipped to handle the rise of fascism by the same people who suddenly have realized the Democratic Party is completely ill equipped to handle the rise of fascism
Government shutdowns are bad, yes. Dismantling agencies is bad. Pulling DC's own funding from its schools, yanking money from Medicaid... all these are bad. You know how the Democrats get a seat at the table to stop this? By showing that they will use the filibuster to stand firm.
The vast majority of people have never protested anything in their life. And I really think that this needs to be taken into account when evaluating who you should respond to on socials re: protests. Folks don't know. They are completely in the land of opinion and vibes.
not to be too Bush-era anarchist about it but the idea that government officials should worry about what their constituents think and always maybe have it in the backs of their minds that things could go very, very badly if folks get too mad is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing
can we bring back the record business as a viable industry so that I can have a desk position where I come up with ideas for reissues and compilations with themes like "seasons of jazz" and it's four CDs, released quarterly, avail individually or by subscription, tailored to the moods of the seasons
When people say "DEI" and "extreme wokeness" I challenge them to articulate exactly what they mean with that. What was "baseline" wokeness? Thus, what counts as extreme? Are they against integration? What are the facts and figures to demonstrate harm? They rarely do/can. Now, here we are.
Every reporter and media person should have alt text set to default and it’s very frustrating to see accounts with big followings who claim that their attention to detail and truth is why they’re worth following not put alt text on images…especially when those images are text-based!
To put the $400 million Trump is holding over Columbia's head in perspective, the university's endowment is $14.8 billion. I know nobody ever wants to touch the nest egg except on rainy days, but...the storm's here. Columbia can be as autonomous as it decides it wants to be.
UPDATED LIST. Whitehouse is also a no on cloture. Let's get talking to: Schatsz Hirono Durbin Peters Klobuchar Cortez Masto Rosen Hassan Shaheen Cantwell and King in addition to the NY sens who are already hearing it every which way. IF YOUR SENATOR IS STILL NOT A NO ON CLOTURE, CALL.
I just said to my husband: "We don't need to be super strategizers, we just need to be more persistent and annoying than Bruce! I'm 100% confident that most Americans can be annoying if they put their minds to it!" Be peristent and annoying in fighting for democracy. Keep calling. You can do this.
Even though the concession has been made, keep calling your Senators if they’re potential cloture votes. The best case scenario is Fetterman and Schumer left out there alone while the rest of the caucus thinks about how much rotten fruit they’re going to clean off the front of their houses.
"Not only is silence in the face of mounting authoritarianism morally objectionable, but, as the Columbia case suggests, it’s not working. Columbia’s leadership made repeated concessions to right-wing critics, only to be the first to come under attack. Remaining silent will not protect us." 👇👇
I don’t know if Facebook trying to legally stop an ex-employee from promoting her tell-all book about the company will end up as a true Streisand Effect situation but it did just make me order a copy immediately in case they manage to get it pulled from stores too lol
I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Majdoline. Before the war Majdoline was an embroiderer of tatreez and a seamstress. She lost her home and business. Now her and two children Yousef, 4 and Tolin, 2 are trying to survive. They are also struggling with skin rashes.
The center wants outreach to these people and the left thinks that economic pain can turn them around and again, Black people, who have survived these fuckers for centuries, are the only accurate ones in begging y’all to leave them to suffer and talk to apathetic voters instead
“…we should shed the idea that AI is a technological artifact with political features and recognize it as a political artifact through and through. AI is an ideological project to shift authority and autonomy away from individuals, towards centralized structures of power.”
If folks are serious about primary challenges of current Democrats in office, then this needs to start with organization and with money. You need a democratic decision making process where people can weigh in on a group of members to target. Then you need to raise a TON of money.

Two things: 1. Alt text is a habit you can develop — I’m not saying I never forget, but I always intend to include it. A setting that reminds you until it becomes habit is a great step. 2. Bluesky in particular makes it extremely easy to copy-paste text in an image you are posting.
Reposting w/ alt text I was already pretty convinced congressmembers should vote no, but I thought one of the stronger arguments on the other side was that a shutdown would be bad for regular government employees and the work they do If the govt workers union says voting yes would be worse? Well.
