an ISP has two costs they care about, occupying a port for a link, then the actual transit/backbone capacity required for the link when you do BW pooling you still pay for all the links you need but you get to share aggregate BW in a more flexible way, it roughly shakes out the same cost-wise

there are all sorts of ways to structure a deal with an ISP such that you can pool bandwidth at a bunch of different sites and then you pay for an aggregate amount this makes your bandwidth allocation dramatically more flexible, and oftentimes you can get for the same rate as a dedicated line

generally, with the big ISPs you're looking at, something like $0.10 per megabit at decent volume (like a 30-50G commit) My guess is they're gambling. most of their customers are not going to be utilizing anywhere near 100% of the pipes that they have most of the time

But from what I hear, OVH philosophically believes you should pay for the size of the pipe and then get that instead of trying to meter usage and that's kind of a radical top-down philosophy organizationally

pricing on OVH VPSs for BW is not guaranteed iiuc where it is for the baremetal the VPSs are overprovisioned and you'll see CPU steal on them occasionally, especially if you're doing CPU intensive work on a lot of VPSs at the same time I haven't had issues with OVH VPS BW tho at scale

Elon Musk is about to become the first trillionaire. The reason poverty exists in the wealthiest country on earth isn't because we can't feed the poor — it's because we can't satisfy the rich. We should tax trillionaires out of existence.

Bit of downtime this morning, sorry everyone! Root cause was a faulty connection to our labeler and will be addressed shortly.

it's costing whatever the background cpu and memory usage is when it isn't actively handling requests so not zero but if your code is efficient could be near zero

its usage based billing not capacity based billing though so you only pay for what you actually end up using

Is American Psycho (2000) meant to be a comedy? I'm 30 minutes in and haven't stopped laughing. It's so campy and hilarious.
