Marblehead, Massachusetts may take the crown for America’s most intentionally prohibitive residential parking requirements... "There shall be 2 exterior parking spaces for each dwelling unit. Garage, carport or tandem spaces shall not be used to satisfy this requirement."

ā€œThe State of #Washington adopted a new approach to statewide parking reform that the Sightline Institute calls ā€˜the strongest statewide rollback of costly parking mandates in the US.’ The story is not just that the legislation is strong—it is clever politically.ā€ www.cnu.org/publicsquare...

I love these buildings because they are useful bar graphs showing the impacts of parking ratios. Florida is full of them.

In Dallas towers are 50% parking 50% occupants.

big fan of this approach (@parkingreform.org calls them parking benefit districts) from an equity perspective: you can have a ā€œuser paysā€ model for safety upgrades in high income neighborhoods, which in turn frees up budget to invest in safety improvements in low income neighborhoods

Make driving more expensive by charging folks to park and to obtain special permits. Then work with folks who live in the impacted neighborhood and use the parking revenue to make walking and biking safer. Seems like a common sense policy to me. bikeportland.org/2025/09/16/p...

And to think drivers TODAY think they are persecuted because they have to observe speed limit and parking regulations! :)

So true! This is why Chicago is eliminating parking minimums near public transport. Builders putting residence within half a mile of the CTA don’t need to include parking space. This includes about 3/4 of the city! #climate #policy #localpolicy

Transit needs to go to places! So many stations along rapid transit lines in North America are surrounded by seas of parking

while I think positive voting motivations are generally better, maybe consider a voting strategy that excludes these candidates. docs.google.com/document/….
Candidates Boston DSA opposes:

Justin Klekota has been openly hostile towards Boston DSA, calling Boston DSA a ā€œhate groupā€ and has fought against trans community members for suggested changes to language regarding trans folk in the Somerville Democratic City Committee’s (SDCC) documentation.
Kristin Strezo, on paper, supports many progressive projects in Somerville. However, when it comes to a contentious vote, Strezo has objected in every way to difficult conversations. While she apologized, her behavior towards her black colleagues has been problematic. She has asked for contentious items like the ceasefire vote to not be in front of the council. She has even absented herself (left the building) for other contentious votes like removing parking minimums.
Jack Perenick, in his role as chair, has used Somerville Democratic City Committee campaign funds to campaign against the more progressive and DSA endorsed incumbent candidate - which is highly irregular for a democratic ward committee. Perenick is also on Bluesky this month, arguing that Somerville should not have passed a ceasefire resolution last year. He’s also used misleading graphics on mailers and his Act-Blue account to imply that he’s already a Ward-5 Councilor (He’s on the ward 5 democratic committee which is not the same).

HB 1110 even explicitly included a provision making the removal of parking minimums in Seattle exempt from SEPA but the city is being purposefully obtuse about that right now.

It kills me that eliminating parking minimums has to have a SEPA analysis. Cars are the largest source of pollution in Seattle, and we have to have an environmental study to measure negative impacts but can’t weigh the benefits.

okay, just so those who can’t follow the process know, CM Hollingsworth, the chair of the SELECT committee, has a consent package of all the straightforward things the councils generally behind. None of the controversial items are there—they all get debate. www.seattle.gov/council/topi...

All across the country, natural experiments are underway. Cities are removing minimum parking mandates. Individuals are responding to this newfound freedom. If you are a student looking for a thesis topic, it's a great opportunity!

I've been stopping at this great little restaurant to buy myself a breakfast burrito about once a week for the last decade as I bike to work. In the short time since Denver got rid of their minimum parking requirements, they turned about half of their old parking lot into outdoor seating...
