I agree with Richard Brody on very little (that’s why it’s so fun to read him!) but I do agree that Nolan’s insertion of a totally modern consciousness into the story of the Odyssey robs it both of its poetic splendor and of the great joy of reading the classics: psychic timetravel

The Odyssey: You will believe a Bostonian is a king from Ithaca. That’s the magic of movies.

the weather is a total washout here, and I assume movie theaters are all packed on Odyssey opening weekend, so I snagged a reservation for one at the bar at one of my favorite restaurants later 😮‍💨

If you think about it, the Odyssey was the original picaresque novel

With the Odyssey movie releasing this weekend, now’s as good a time as any to reaffirm that large portions of the epic will feature in my forthcoming book ‘Final Fantasy VII and the Trojan War’, with heavy focus on parallels in Crisis Core. Due out in 2027. #FinalFantasymythology

Let's ride the hype like Odysseus riding Poseidon's waves. This is my Greek Pillar Bookmark, stitched in vaporwave colors on perforated paper. Find this one in my shop, or ask your favorite LNS to stock it! www.etsy.com/listing/4438... #CrossStitch #StitchSky #Odyssey #book
A cross stitch bookmark shaped like a broken greek pillar, trimmed to size. It's stitched in vaporwave colored gradients and placed on top of an open page listing the names of Greek Mythology figures and staged with berries and flowers. BAD Stitch.

If you adapt the Odyssey, and especially Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey, Odysseus has to be a complicated man. But Matt Damon's Odysseus is just a simple man tryna get home.

We got out very early this morning for the 8am screening of Nolan's Odyssey. Yes, the news is true: it is a masterpiece and lives up to the hype. It overflows with memorable scenes and images and forceful characters (not least a dog that is just lying there). The translation of πολύτροπος as... /1

I'm still so fascinated with how over the culture war is. What happened to the Odyssey is going to have to be studied by sociologists for decades. The richest man in the world tried to relaunch the culture war against a movie that ended up getting nearly flawless reviews and making insane money.

I will see the Odyssey like I see most new movies. Years later at night on my computer and then wonder if anyone else likes this underrated gem

I asked Adam what time they'd be opening the doors for the first Odyssey screening of the day and then I got here an hour before that with a folding chair and my Kindle 🙂‍↕️
Caroline selfie. She is wearing aviators and a white shirt with a painting of some skulls and fruit on it (The Three Skulls by Cezanne).
She is sitting in a grey folding camp chair. An image of Ellen Ripley is adhered to the wall behind her.

#odyssey #spoilers So, did Christopher Nolan really cut all of the dialogue between Odysseus and Polyphemus and think, "Nobody will miss that?"

I’m also convinced there’s an 85/15 split in the criticism camp in terms of people who hadn’t / had heard of the Odyssey before this kerfuffle

I mean I’ll take it, I do not mind being defaulted the 85 side of an 85/15 split one bit. it just takes an insane amount of crashout from the other guys for this to wind up in the stack it’s in, that’s all

odyssey is settling well in my mind. like even with the original book, I find that the Odyssey section of the Odyssey (that is, the journey home) is way more interesting than anything else. And Nolan's film absolutely nails this aspect. It's hard to imagine the cyclops, or cerces, realized better
