I appreciate everyone asking me if I'm all right because they know I'm in LA. ...But for real you guys. Much like actual wolves in the wild, Los Angeles is much, much bigger than you think it is. The red part is where the protests are. And even then I was there yesterday afternoon and it was fine 😅

Tank arriving in Los Angeles, obviously there is no Tank Man (like in China) because ICE would have just shot him, and the compliant Media would have called him a terrorist.

While civil unrest rages on in Los Angeles, Trump and Pete Hegseth gave a speech to troops at Fort Bragg with a very clear message. I react to the Fort Bragg speeches and explain why it's a desecration of our military. Watch here: youtu.be/PXpANSq4rrk

Today I talk about Chris Rufo, the Assignment Editor for tyranny, and how his brutal, open honesty about his aims and methods makes it clear what's going to happen next in Los Angeles and anywhere else people push back against authoritarianism. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/c
.
Since then Rufo has moved on to characterizing all manner of other parts of the liberal/progressive agenda as evil, destructive, Marxist plots aimed at destroying America while continuing the project of transforming the concepts of Critical Race Theory and diversity, equity, and inclusion into epithets/boogeymen. He is the reason why your racist uncle or your jackass coworker or your insurance salesman-turned-state legislator and any number of other people who wouldn't know CRT from ELO from their elbow cited "Critical Race Theory" or "DEI" as something they were good and mad about to any pollster who would listen in 2020, 2022, and 2024 and beyond. He and the quasi-intellectual overhaul he gave to what is, in effect, no different than old school gutter racism, is the reason why Republicans have no compunction about doing and saying what they do these days when it comes to racial issues. He gave them some words that they can deploy like the N-word and, somehow, not get into trouble for doing it. And it has worked marvelously for them.

The interesting thing about it, though is that, unlike conventional political actors or pundits, Rufo has not even attempted to hide the fact that this is a spin job. He has not even attempted to hide the fact that he's in the business of manipulating public opinion with his framing for a specific reason. Indeed, in what are now-infamous 2021 tweets, he laid it out explicitly:

"We have successfully frozen their brand—"critical race theory"—into the public conversation and are steadily driving up negative perceptions. We will eventually turn it toxic, as we put all of the various cultural insanities under that brand category . . . The goal is to have the public read something crazy in the newspaper and immediately think ‘critical race theory.’ We have decodified the term and will recodify it to annex the entire range of cultural constructions that are unpopular with Americans."
Which, hey, give the guy points for honesty, as here, and elsewhere, he has freely admitted that he is engaged in propaganda, not the championing of genuinely held or virtuous political causes. He has continued to post in this manner, openly admitting where he's attempting to take right wing messaging and why, not unlike an edgy magician telling his audience how he plans to do the next trick while knowing that he's still going to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

And he's certainly pulled the wool over some people's eyes. Particularly that of the New York Times, the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and other influential and historically liberal publications where Rufo is routinely quoted and profiled as some "unconventional" or admirably heterodox thinker.

Indeed, over the past four or five years those outlets have run frequent, mostly uncritical features about Rufo or have prominently and approvingly quoted him in straight news articles regarding the latest right wing initiatives, casting him as some sort of truth-teller or straight shooter precisely because he does not say things diplomatically. It's pretty clear that they are far more impressed and even amused by his savvy for its own sake than they are concerned with just how destructive and regressive the results of his project have been and continue to be. Whenever I read stories in which establishment media outfits launder Rufo's odiousness into something quasi–respectable, I imagine the wealthy and influential denizens of 1930s salons inviting in a particularly charismatic fascist to speak in an effort to seem worldly and open minded. Or perhaps that bit in Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" where the David Letterman-esque talk show host invites The Joker on, who then says "I'm going to kill everyone in this room," after which the host laughs it off and then the Joker proceeds to do exactly what he said he'd do.
Rufo, for his part, has not changed his game a bit. He continues to publicly and unapologetically strategize ways in which to more fully empower America's fascists, and he does it in shockingly straightforward ways. Take this, which Rufo wrote at his Substack newsletter yesterday, about how he believes the Trump Regime should approach the protests in Los Angeles:

[Federal] agencies should dispatch unmarked vans to follow key agitators and snatch them from the streets while the media are not looking. The most effective riot control is to take movement leaders off the field, infiltrate their networks, disrupt the flow of funding, and roll them up in federal investigations. Denying the Left trained protest leaders now will create a strong precedent for the rest of the president’s term.
This is unvarnished Pinochet-style authoritarianism in which Rufo is explicitly advocating for the disappearing of protestors in “unmarked vans.” Based on the basic, horrifying honesty of what he says and how he says it, I am certain that Rufo means it. Based on the success his strategizing has brought to the Republicans who listened to him previously and who, thanks in no small part to him, are now in complete control of the federal government, it is almost certainly something they will begin to do.

Remember that the next time some New York Times reporter quotes Chris Rufo as if he were merely some public intellectual harmlessly opining on something in an effort to both-sides the issue. He's anything but that. He's an assignment editor for tyranny.

I stand in complete solidarity with our immigrant neighbors in Los Angeles who are being viciously targeted by ICE. These militaristic tactics will only serve to inflame tensions and make all of us less safe—all while taking one step closer to a police state. This won’t stay limited to LA.

We knew this day was coming but it still feels like a gut punch. So many of my good friends (some of them in the L.A. band the Wondermints) became his backing group in 2000, playing the 'Pet Sounds' LP, then all of 'SMiLE,' and then creating new music. My thoughts are with them and Brian's family.

US military troops deployed to Los Angeles are allowed to temporarily detain individuals until law enforcement agents arrive to arrest them, a senior US military official said reut.rs/3FIzrgN
