now reading about the Incredible String Band. Potentially very bleak Wikipedia sentence: "Her whereabouts have been publicly unknown since 1986, when she was last seen hitchhiking across the Arizona desert in the U.S."

If you look trump up on Wikipedia, the pic is his mug shot with a flag photoshopped in. Haha.

ActBlue, Wikipedia. These organizations need to assume that ultimately goons will be sent to their offices and they need to be prepared to defend their offices as well as have their data backed up outside of the United States.

would literally go to war for wikipedia, i donate monthly and you should too

If Wikipedia didn’t exist, I don’t think it would be created in today’s internet. Don’t take it for granted.

Of course the republican authoritarian regime is attacking Wikipedia. They need to destroy all facts and information so their propaganda is all that remains. I’m telling you right now: They’ll get rid of the internet if they aren’t stopped soon.

Back when people said “dont use wikipedia as a source,” its citations sucked. You didnt know where any info came from or if it was any good. Wikipedia then spent decades improving the quality and clarity of its sourcing. What LLM can provide clear and accurate attributions of its claims?
Skeet with author name and pic chopped off: “Some of the anti-Al stuff feels a bit like when people would say "don't use Wikipedia as a source." It's just like anything else, a piece of information that you weigh against multiple sources and your own understanding of its likely failure modes”

Was looking up the Wikipedia article for Mayday to make a May Day joke but it turns out that there is an alternative official call for help And that call is "pan-pan"

Wikipedia entry on Ed Martin; 'This made him the first U.S. attorney for D.C. in at least 50 years to be appointed without experience as a judge or a federal prosecutor.[13]'

Since Rich Johnston likes to claim he's a "reporter" not a "journalist," what exactly *is* the attitude towards a "reporter" just blatantly plagiarizing material off of Wikipedia?

The difference is that you can track down the source of info on Wikipedia! Generative AI has its use cases but it is not and will never be a useful tool for accessing information

Some of the anti-AI stuff feels a bit like when people would say "don't use Wikipedia as a source." It's just like anything else, a piece of information that you weigh against multiple sources and your own understanding of its likely failure modes
