A genetic researcher who has spent a decade studying how new drugs are developed (after decades doing it himself) writes that NIH funding is crucial to the process, and has been a huge driver of innovation and economic growth. The White House has proposed a 40% budget cut for 2026.
How the NIH became the backbone of American medical research and a major driver of innovation and economic growth

Dr. Oyedeji’s #NIH-funded SCD study was cut midway. Such funding cuts not only disrupt patient care but also may discourage researchers, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Learn more: ow.ly/aYaV50XKqQU #Fight4Hematology #ResearchSavesLives #SickleCell #HemeSky

We gave Jay Bhattacharya an opportunity to clarify his vaccine stance: does he REALLY believe that the vaccine is worse than the disease? Instead, he launched into a defense of MAHA as the future of scientific inquiry, and never really gave us a straight answer... @repauchincloss.bsky.social

The NIH has funded research underlying about 99% of newly approved medicines while saving the pharmaceutical industry nearly $3 billion per drug in development costs. A proposed 40% budget cut threatens this engine of American innovation and economic growth. buff.ly/jWhsPXt

The NIH Director's new piece in a right-wing rag, The Spectator, is shocking. Ugh, he CELEBRATES overseeing a "large-scale effort" to "eliminate DEI" from NIH processes And, as Dr Green notes, the piece is wrong, eg it says 'Chronic disease does not discriminate.' Bhattacharya knows this is false:

Neither NIH nor CDC has updated Lyme stats. The CDC page was last updated with cases from 2023. Same for CDC long COVID stats--2023. The estimates for chronic Lyme and long COVID seem to be similar -- 10-20% of acute cases? #Medsky #IDsky #epidemiology

RFK keeps saying that more people have chronic Lyme than long COVID. I'd love to know where those stats come from. Does anyone have such good data? Any Lyme scientists out there? #Medsky #IDsky #ticks #infectiousdisease #tickborneillness

NEW: Friday memo from the NIH shows the agency is still thinking about terminations & aligning awards with its priorities The upside, experts told me, is that this new guidance offers more of an opportunity for researchers to push back on terminations www.statnews.com/2025/12/….
NIH specifies how grant reviewers should ensure alignment with Trump priorities

Another great example of wasted time and money, courtesy of the NIH. Thought MAGA/MAHA didn't like language policing — it seems like if they're in charge of it, they're happy to commit any amount of employee hours to hunt out those dastardly "health equity" folks.

NEWS: NIH will pause new funding for grants that include "misaligned" terms like "health equity" and "structural racism." Agency staff are required to use a "computational text analysis tool" to identify grants that include the unsanctioned terms. www.notus.org/health-scien...

I led 33 of my colleagues in sending a letter to NIH Director Bhattacharya, urging them to fully fund the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN). SWAN has conducted more than 25 years of menopause research, & we must continue the program to strengthen our understanding of women’s health.
