I just signed a bill to rename Minnesota’s community solar program after Speaker Melissa Hortman. Melissa was a true champion of solar and I was proud to sign this in honor of my dear friend.

Some good news The government have changed regulations to allow plug in solar panels, already very popular in Europe, without the need for an electrician They can be hung from a balcony and are simply plugged into a normal socket Cost is around £400 and will save around £70 per year

My goal is to have solar panels on my house, and be able to charge an EV with them too. I work from home so my car will be with me all day to get whatever it needs from the sun.

How are states doing on removing bureaucratic obstacles to rooftop solar power? Environment America has a new scorecard & y'all ... it's pretty dismal. No state gets an A. Only two states -- CA & TX -- get a B. State lawmakers really need to get on this.

The combination of plug-in solar and battery storage (and relatedly, cheap e-bikes and mopeds) is going to be unbelievably revolutionary in the Global South.

one of the biggest technological revolutions in history and it has nothing to do with crypto, AI, metaverse or any of the things the media relentlessly hypes

SOLAR POWER POST We got rooftop solar installed last Thursday, and I've already managed to change powercos from Mercury (yawn) to PowerEdge. Tiny wee company, very un-corporate, actual humans signing emails (hi Toni, hi Roy!). And the highest buy-back rate on the market - 20c. Let's see how it goes.

Brad Lander voted in favor of the resolution to shut down Indian Point. Now? “I think we have realized that if we are going to transition away from fossil fuels fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate damage, that safe nuclear energy has a role to play.” open.substack.com/pub/nye….
Harry Siegel
You co-sponsored a bill a decade ago urging the federal government not to renew the licenses for the Indian Point nuclear nuclear plant. That didn't pass. But you know, the plant shut down in 2021.
Brad Lander
That was a mistake. I co-sponsored that resolution?
Harry Siegel
Yeah. So that's what I was going to ask. Have your views on nuclear changed at all? And more broadly, how would you approach energy policy, which is obviously front and center, given America's war in Iran, and Israel's, as congressman?
Brad Lander
Well, I mean, first and foremost, I still think we need the core tenets and outlines of the Green New Deal. We need to invest in renewable and clean energy and have a transition away from fossil fuels to renewables, as far as we can. I still want to do the Public Solar NYC, this public option for rooftop solar. I was in Copenhagen and I saw their offshore wind. I mean, that is what we need to be doing. And our politics at the moment are very far from it. But I do think there is a role for nuclear energy within our transition away from fossil fuels.
And I had not remembered that I had signed on to that resolution, but I'll view that as a mistake I made, and something I've changed my opinion on, I think like a lot of progressives on energy policy, who came out of a time when there were, for understandable reasons, a lot of anxieties about nuclear power plants. But I think we have realized that if we are going to transition away from fossil fuels fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate damage, that safe nuclear energy has a role to play.

Low-income households who own their own home... I wonder which demographic that will target? To be fair, it will probably boost support for Net Zero among retirees, so there's a logic there. Hopefully there will be support for renters to get their own plug-in solar set-ups when ready soon...

Con Edison is supporting NY legislation that would make it easier to install and use plug-in solar. Elsewhere in the country, utilities have opposed these bills (link to my @npr.org story on that in comment).

The Sunny Act would allow apartment dwellers, whether renters or homeowners, to use easy-to-install and affordable solar panels: gothamist.visitlink.me/cF0lVc

The best life hack for home-owners at the moment is installing rooftop solar and a battery, and switching to an EV. Put it on the mortgage and the extra payments will likely be less than what you save.

⚡🌱 Community energy is what the transition looks like when it starts at home. From rooftop solar ☀️ to shared local projects powering neighbourhoods 🏘️, community energy puts people, not just utilities, at the centre of the system. The energy transition isn’t just national, it’s local.

This must be an accident: Rooftop solar is straight up booming in Florida after a GOP bill removed hurdles to installations, per BNEF. The state's on track to install 700 mw of panels, about 2x last year. Trump's self-made energy emergency means he'll be surrounded by solar panels

Three separate lines, one for each year of 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2024 line tops out at about 200 megawatts through the first 13 weeks of the year. the 2025 line tops out at about 100 in the same time period. The 2026 line is already pushing 500 mW. Source: Bloomberg NEF
