How does your cultural identity shape your creative expression?
In the painting Untitled (2019), we see a group of people lost at sea, wearing red life jackets and waving their arms, swimming to survive. There is no boat, safety net, or someone trying to save them: they are alone, struggling not to drown metaphorically and literally. The movement of their arms and the pools of vivid watercolor give a sense of loss, danger, and anxiety.
A quote by the artist: "I am from many places. I live with that duality and multiplicity in my mind, and in my soul, and in my body."

A new book about Ruth Asawa and her artist-mother community reminds us that taking care of children and making art — be it public art, community work, with children, or for children — are radical acts of parenting and anti-totalitarian making.

Jordan Troeller’s book about the Bay Area sculptor and her artist-mother community shows us how reciprocity and caretaking become the work itself, not just the subject or the conditions.

Greetings from Gaza 💋 (by Banksy)
Digital artwork by Banksy based on a historic Holocaust photograph. A group of prisoners stand behind barbed wire wearing striped camp uniforms. Their faces are pale, their heads shaved, and each has been digitally altered with bright pink lipstick, creating a stark and unsettling contrast between the brutality of the scene and the cosmetic detail. The piece highlights themes of memory, commodification, and the tension between tragedy and modern culture.

Maltz Museum's "Motion" takes art, makes it public and puts it on wheels. Lowering barriers and inviting all communities to engage with stories behind the art traveling is the result. It's a late-summer initiative that is picking up speed.

“I work on a painting until something magical happens. Until it becomes something outside of myself, a new vision ... You lose a kind of control, but you gain something else.” —Emily Mason

Emily Mason’s Quest for Color and Truth

The late painter was influenced by Abstract Expressionism, but she had none of the hubris of its male artists. For her, painting was not about an experience, it was an experience.

Lisa Corinne Davis’s paradoxical paintings speak to our age of simultaneous information overload and disparity, where the gap between language and meaning, and rich and poor, increases by the hour.
