And some people still need that kind of parenting, decades later, when they’ve won their referendum or become President

So much of parenting a child under the age of about two and a half is trying to explain to them that, whatever they are furious about, they actually did to themself

And their managed Grafana stuff is really great. Instead of inventing their own monitoring UIs and stack, they just provision a Grafana stack per account and automatically push stats about your resources there. Then you can easily set up alert rules and custom dashboards. ❤️

No, I agree, but I'm guessing there's been a pivot in consumers consumption habits, and they no doubt have to satisfy what people wish to be shown en-masse.

It's fascinating how differently the offerings hit. I am pretty locked into Stan, but it's only because of Sport. I almost never watch Prime but I have friends who seem to do most of their viewing there.

Australia will need to have a couple of serious public conversations. One will be around gun regulation. There's good reason to think this might go well. The other is around antisemitism, religious identity, and related issues. The local media and political class aren't good at these topics.

Netflix is the most global streaming service. There's a regular supply of something in Spanish that's specific or special as you put it. And other good European stuff. In the past few years my YouTube consumption has dropped a lot.

It was. People have convinced themselves that it is good & necessary but it isn't. Opposition & resistance do not require the internet. The building blocks exist & we should use the technology to build systems outside of the commercial internet. We should become human again.

I've basically given up reading the news altogether. I know that the argument goes that it's good to be informed, and I've done this all my life. But the manner of delivery has changed and the race to the bottom of sensationalism means that 99% is the news wasn't of interest to me especially.

Today, programmers are expected to accomplish everything, and some, and what was considered difficult a decade ago is now assumed to be solved already, even easy.

I share this to highlight that, even with modern AI tools, tasks such as building operating systems and implementing low-level dynamic programming algorithms remain difficult. What has changed is the expectation we have for people who program. They have increased significantly since back then!

In 2012, two topics challenged me significantly in CS. One was implementing the Needleman–Wunsch and Smith–Waterman dynamic programming algorithms in C to sequence a rat genome. The other was building the MTX operating system, a Unix-like system for Intel x86 PCs.
