6/ Lapin's proven an incompetent commander throughout the war, but the Kremlin is likely punishing him now as part of a campaign to scapegoat & punish officials for failing to repel UA's Kursk Oblast incursion in Aug. 2024. RU forces recently advanced near Kupyansk, Pokrovsk, & Velykomykhailivka.

3/ Reports that Russia is creating a strategic reserve further indicate that the Kremlin is not interested in ending its war against Ukraine but remains committed to achieving its war goals on the battlefield and may be preparing for a conflict with NATO.

He was also an abolitionist and genuine progressive for that time, he got into multiple brawls with southern cadets at West Point so I will always have a soft spot for him

And if you doubt his courage, after he was wounded at the battle of Winchester in fall 1864, instead of evacuating, he had his men carry him around on a stretcher to direct his unit

Yes, absolutely, he basically laid the foundation for the modern army from an organization, staffing, and education standpoint. His book “the military policy of the United States” published posthumously was very influential for many years after his death

more influential than, say, Grant or Sherman?

I’m reupping a piece on Emory Upton who was probably the most influential American officer of the late 19th century. He was genuinely a good tactician, hyper agressive and a outstanding combat leader in his own right. But he also drew all the wrong lessons from a civ-mil standpoint…

don't make me tap the sign

the Lisa simpson on a stage meme with the text "combat experience can teach you about yourself. It does not teach you about foreign policy, strategy, war, politics, or governance"

“… No other single work of sculpture known to me can so attach itself to a person for life, making constant claims on intelligence, intuition, and feeling and yet remain so fresh, changing as one changes, rewarding age and experience. You don't outgrow The Gates, you grow into them.”
THE GATES OF HELL Auguste Rodin I have loved these awesome doors since that winter day in 1949 when I first stood below them outside the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia and was terrified at the prospect of writing my dissertation on The Gates of Hell. In one way or another, I have lived with them for thirty-five years, and yet when it comes to lecturing or writing about this great portal there are still exhilarating things to discover, accompanied by inevitable dismay over the inadequacy of one's own language and culture to share revelations.... I've seen the doors in museums and foundries, in plaster and wax, in negative molds and raw bronze sections, and they never fail to surprise. Look at them in the rain or when a winter sun is low and they take on different qualities. Light them at night from below, the way Rodin must have done in his studio a thousand times, and you realize you don't know them as a work of art.... No other single work of sculpture known to me can so attach itself to a person for life, making constant claims on intelligence, intuition, and feeling and yet remain so fresh, changing as one changes, rewarding age and experience. You don't outgrow The Gates, you grow into them. —Albert E. Elsen, The Gates of Hell, 1985 DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF ALBERT E. ELSEN, FRIEND AND SCHOLAR FEBRUARY 2, 1995 IRIS AND B. GERALD CANTOR

Remember that train sabotage in Leningrad last week? The Russians have cleaned it all up! Note the camouflage to hide it from satellite imagery.
