The FIBA World Cup was a breath of fresh air, and exactly what a lot of fans have wanted from the WNBA the last few years. Some thoughts on the differences I noticed on and off the court, and what I think the W should take note of — check it out.

Chris DeMarco was chatty during today's postgame presser, voluntarily wanting to state how he feels about Breanna Stewart. It began when I asked Rebecca Allen about how her first season playing with Stewart has impacted her, and DeMarco made sure he could get in some extra thoughts.
Jackie Powell: Bec your whole career you haven't played with Stewie. You've been against her, or you've played against her. Can you just take us through what it has been like playing with her, especially in moments like these?

Rebecca Allen: I mean, I don't want to butter her up too much [laughs], but for me, honestly, playing with people like Stewie is a gift. I think she's a different kind of superstar as well as someone who the way that she speaks to her team is unlike no other. So for me, it's been, it honestly has been a gift to be able to play like alongside you.

But she makes the game so much easier. So I think the stars that not only create for themselves but for everyone else is selfless is rare. So for me, yeah, it's something that I really, I really enjoy.

Chris DeMarco: I'm gonna and-one that because I think if you ask any coach who's ever coached or played against her, she is the best player in the world. She's an absolute winner. It's just you can feel it when she's off the court. You feel when she's on the court. Not only here, obviously FIBA World Cup, everything else, and it's just like there's something about her and her character. And as a coach, like she's never not looking you in the eyes, she's never not looking her teammate in the eyes, she's never not leading, and she does everything that contributes to winning, and to be able to coach her has been incredible for me, especially first year head coach, and I just think it's overlooked sometimes. You know, people want to see launch threes, they want to see all this other stuff. But when it comes to impact and winning, like there's nobody better. It's not even close.

1. Valkyries signed center Aminata Gueye to a rest-of-season contract. She played on 2026 FIBA World Cup France with Gabby and Ja. 2. Valkyries have also waived center Nadia Fingall. (No reasons given, but I hope this means Nadia had another opportunity she wanted to take.)

A lot of the players from the FIBA World Cup have been cooking since they got back to the WNBA. You love to see it. I thought the international travel, jet lag, and little rest would have the opposite effect.
