The writer Peter Matthiessen traveled the world looking for elusive snow leopards and rare cranes. But a new biography shows that the genuine self he was really seeking would be much harder to find, writes John Kaag:

``When the great Gampopa had many spiritual experiences, he explained them to Jetsun Milarepa and was thus able to avoid deviations and continue to progress.’’ Guidance of a qualified teacher ~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche justdharma.org
‘’If we allow water to remain still without agitating it, it becomes limpid and transparent; but if we stir it up with a stick, mud rises and the water becomes turbid. Likewise, leave the mind in a state of natural clarity, without interference, so that awareness remains limpid.’’- Dilgo Khentse Rinpoche -

When we direct our attention toward our suffering , we see our potential for happiness. That is why the Buddha called suffering a holy truth. When we use the word " suffering " in Buddhism , we mean the kind of suffering that can show us the way out Thich Nhat Hanh #dralex #zen

The United States could use some more Buddhism. It's shocking the number of people who have zero clue that their conscious is their true guide. Not a lot of self awareness going on around here.

Okay. I have Thoughts about this part of Buddhism. “Freedom from desire and attachment” is, in my view, more the freedom from fear of losing things. It isn’t a stoic “you will not like or enjoy or appreciate anything”. It’s freedom from wanting and not having, having and fear of losing.

“I am completely obsessed with this game about freedom from desire and attachment!”

I didn't think I had any opulence in my photo files, but last night something reminded me of this. In 2013 I spent a week at Sitigu Buddha Vihara monastery near Austin, TX. Opulence everywhere! #AlphabetChallenge #WeekOforOpulent .
Sitigu is a residence/monastery in the Burmese tradition of Theravada Buddhism. It has a golden Burmese style pagoda and lush interiors. This golden Buddha sits in the lavish meditation hall. It's an exquisite place and the monks who were there at the time were delightful. I've been to my share of monastic residences/viharas/monasteries in this country, but most are basic. Sitigu was as close to Burma/Myanmar as I will get in this lifetime, and quite an experience.
Pagoda detail at Sitigu. It's a scaled-down exact replica of a famous pagoda in Burma, painted with a gold paint not available in this country.
