Romy twiddles their fingers nervously. "Let's see, uh... about myself? Um. Well." The page then runs through a series of flashbacks, as Romy overlays themselves. "I'm from New Bork City." Romy is seen behind the counter in a bakery, wearing their work apron. "I work at a bakery down the street. Or. Uh. Used to. Before I... heh." Romy is seen scribbling with a pencil at a desk, with a diagram of the brain on a poster in the background. "I've been studying hard to become a therapy dog... I-in school, I mean. I want to be able to help people. So I guess that's, y'know, the long term goal... um." Romy sweats nervously, while pointing comedically to a whiteboard, where they've listed 1.) Hardworking, 2.) Nice and 3.) Punctual?. "I'm really hardworking! And I'm nice. I've been told I'm nice. And... punctual? Y-yeah..." Romy is positioned on their bike, heading into a small town under a night sky, where a sign motions "Welcome to SLUMBER". "I left the city and came here because... well, I don't know, really. I guess I just wanted to start fresh. You know? So I guess... that's why..."

Book 1.3: The Interview Pt. II - February 18, 2019 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics
Romy is seen sitting across a small table in a tiny room that looks like an interrogation Romy, where an armadillo in a cowboy hat is scribbling on a piece of paper. Romy: "..... I'm sorry. I think I messed up. Can I start over?" The armadillo keeps writing without looking up. "S'all good. How would'ya rate your sense of smell?" Romy shivers nervously. "Well, uh... I'd imagine it's... pretty average, sir... by canine standards, anyway. Ha..." The armadillo: "You're hired." Romy looks up, shocked. "W-wait... what?" We see an awkward photo of Romy on the table along with his notes. Romy's birthday is 2/29/92, registered as Sex: F and Race: Dog. The notes say that Romy seems a bit awkward, but went to therapy school which means she may be empathetic yet driven, and has a sense of smell that proves to be a useful asset. The armadillo interviewer: "Position could use fillin', I reckon. Don't exactly get that many folk comin' all the way out here." Romy: "Yeah, but... just like that?" The interviewer: "You do want it, don'tcha?"

There's a birds-eye view shot of Romy and the armadillo across from each other at the table. Romy: "W-well... sure, but -" The armadillo extends his hand to shake: "Then it's yours." They both shake hands. As they continue shaking hands, the armadillo says, "Welcome aboard. Just swing by tomorrow 'n I'll send someone out to show ya the ropes." Romy pulls their arm back shyly. "Um, well... thank you, sir. I don't know what to say." The armadillo opens the door and tilts his hat. "With all due respect... just call me Dallas."

Dallas escorts Romy outside. Romy, nervously: "Sorry, si - I mean, DALLAS!" There's a shot of the building they both just left, which has the words 'LOOKING GLASS Detective Agency' on the window, along with signs that say 'Now HIRING' 'Lost and Found!'. Dallas: "You gonna need help findin' a place to stay?" Romy: "Oh, um... no thanks..." Dallas looks out into the distance, while Romy props up their bike. Dallas: "A'ight. Guess I'll be off t'do my evenin' patrol, then." He looks at Romy and smiles. "'N hey! Don't be a stranger to the folks here in Slumber. Anyone here might be willin' to lend you a helping hoof and - well... I'm sure you'll find a place for yerself in due time. You take care tonight, Rosemary." Romy looks back, hood pulled over their head and hand in their pocket, ready to take off on their bike, with the backdrop of a desert, cactuses and starry evening sky behind them. "I... I will. Thank you."

Book 1.6: A Dog and her Bike - March 11, 2019 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics
Dallas walks away, leaving Romy on their own. Romy looks down sadly. 'Dallas seems nice. I should have let him help me.' They get on their bike and start riding away. 'But then again... maybe it's better this way. I've always been better off alone.' Romy looks around, still riding and still pondering. 'It's just... everything is happening so fast. Suddenly I'm here. I have a new job.' They pass by a street sign that says WANDER Blvd. 'I don't even know when I'm supposed to come in tomorrow.' They sweat nervously. 'Oh no. I should've asked. So much for being punctual...' They ride past a building, looking a bit more determined. 'Okay, first things first. Find a hotel. Settle in. Then I can start worrying about -' A voice off-screen captures their attention: "Heeeeeyyyy! You there!"

Book 1.7: Social Anxiety - March 18, 2019 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics
Romy looks across the other side of the path and sees a hyena there, leaning against a window in a ragged jacket, holding a beer bottle. The hyena: "Yeeeah, YOU! Red sweater? Get over here! ... hic..." Romy points to themself in confusion, then trails their bike over to the drunken hyena. As they walk, they think to themselves, troubled, 'Okay, this is scary. I don't know who this guy is. And suddenly I'm walking toward him? His scent makes me a bit uneasy, but... it's probably just the anxiety talking! I'm sure he's fine. Besides, I can't turn back now. That'd be weird.' They force a smile and hold their head up, trying to feign confidence. 'Come on, Romy, loosen up! Just go up and say hi. That should be easy! Just... just say...' They finally speak: "Uh... h-h... hi... ?"
