The pelagic red crab, also known as the squat lobster. Not a crab. Not a lobster. Just vibes.
A pelagic red crab stands at the edge of a shale rock, looking directly at the camera. Its large, front claws are draped over the edge of the rocky surface.

Wishing that the new year brings you as much joy as this picture of Ruby chomping on ice. 🦦🧊 Sea otters are one of the few marine mammals that can drink seawater—thanks to their otterly impressive kidneys, which filter out excess salt! Still, most of their hydration comes from the food they eat.
Ruby the sea otter munches on ice cubes as a treat while laying on the smooth rocky surface of the Sea Otters exhibit at the Aquarium

Our volunteers are leading by example this Earth Month with reusable water bottles! Every small action, like ditching single-use plastic, makes a big difference for our ocean. Join us and make waves of change, one refill, one action, one person at a time. 🌱💙

I always hear the Bell Miners but they’re usually in the tree tops so I hardly ever see them. So that’s cool.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium has welcomed a new Pacific harbor seal, and while “Garry” is the youngest and smallest of the Aquarium’s seals, she’s making a big splash! 🦭aquarium.org/welcome-garry
Garry the harbor seal floats with her bottom half in the water and her flippers and head resting on the edge of her pool. She has silvery gray fur marked with black and white mottled spots. She is facing the camera; she has no eyes, and has dark fur right below her eye sockets. She muzzle is dark and she has long whiskers. Photo by OCAq's Jeremy Burke

My kids: “Mum, Mum, quick! There’s an eagle on the driveway!” The eagle:
A white-headed pigeon on a concrete driveway. Definitely not an eagle, but perhaps close enough if you’re a 4 year old.

"We love the Aquarium! Especially the penguins!" While we don't have penguins here at the #OregonCoastAquarium, it's the thought that counts! 💙 Today's #DidYouKnow features the common murre, a dapperly plumed seabird native to Oregon's rugged coastline.
This image features a picture of a Magellanic penguin on the left and common murres on the right. Text overlay reads "Did you know? The common murre is easily mistaken for a penguin at first glance. Despite their similar looks, these birds have key differences."
This picture features a common murre skidding atop the water, wings spread. Text overlay reads "Unlike penguins, the common murre can fly! They use fast, strong wing beats to fly above the waves and reach rocky outcroppings."
This picture features a large group of adult and juvenile Emperor penguins. The text overlay reads "Common murres and penguins live in different hemispheres! Penguins are found below the equator while common murres are found above."
This image features a picture of a Gentoo penguin on the left and a common murre on the right. The text overlay reads "Penguins and common murres fill similar niches. They prey on small fish, and are in turn preyed upon by marine mammals and sharks."

You’re one in a vermilion, rockfish! No, really! Rockfish nearly disappeared in Monterey Bay due to overfishing. But thanks to people—the fishing industry, scientists, and government agencies—working together, the Sebastes populations are rocking on!
A red-orange vermilion rockfish with white mottling hovers effortlessly in a pocket in the rocky reef, surrounded by a ring of dozens of brightly colored brittle stars.
