"We agreed no more murder attempts," Ren reminded her, because that had been a discussion in January, one that Akechi had been disinclined to take part in, but had still been forced to promise that he wouldn't attempt to murder Ren—or anyone else on the team—again. Ann snorted. "Please, that was just to keep Ake—" her eyes flickered towards Sojiro "—Crow from shooting someone in the head again." "He wasn't going to shoot anyone in the head again," Ren insisted. Ann and Yusuke both shot him disbelieving looks. "Shadows don't count," Ren pointed out, because they didn't; every single one of them had shot a non-human shadow in the head without any regret at least a dozen times. Ann placed her elbow on the counter and lent forward over it. "Ren," she said, tone dry. "He shot Maruki in the head," Yusuke pointed out. "Twice." "He blocked it!" Ann hummed and rocked her head back and forth a couple of times, then turned to Yusuke. "He sort of deserved it." "Well, yes," Yusuke admitted. "But that does not negate the fact that he did, in fact, approach that fight fully intending to shoot someone in the head." He turned back to Ren. "Thus." "Fine," Ren muttered. "But he wasn't going to shoot any of us in the head again."

Sojiro nodded, then glanced over at the clock. “Come on, let’s get you over to Takemi-sensei.” He glanced at Futaba as Ren got up, collecting their dishes. “Do you need us to walk you back to the house? Kid, just leave them in the sink,” he added, before Ren could finish the reflexive grab for the cleaning supplies. “I got this,” Futaba promised, jumping off her stool to strike a victory pose. “Our fearless hero is, once again, braving the most dangerous streets of Yongen-Jaya, prepared to fight any—” “No fighting,” Sojiro interrupted, laughter in his voice. “Straight home, don’t talk to any strangers.” “No stranger talking, got it! Not a high enough level for that questline,” Futaba called, and Ren snorted. “Ren! Do you play videos games?” “Uhh, yes?” Ren decided, because he did enjoy playing video games sometimes, but not anywhere near on the level that Futaba did. “Good!” She pointed a finger up at his face, and then hesitated. “No glasses.” Ren shrugged. “They broke.” She squinted. “You’re not as upset as you should be.” “Ah.” Ren tugged on one of his curls. “That. So. I don’t…actually need them?” “Betrayal!” Futaba wailed, which was pretty much the exact same reaction she’d had last time, when Morgana had seen fit to cause trouble by making sure Futaba knew that she was, in fact, the only member of the Thieves who needed glasses.

I finished drafting the last chapter before Hollow Forest in The Crow Cries at Midnight yesterday. It had a moment I really enjoyed for Akechi, and it took the plot in a direction I didn't expect. Shadowkechi kinda just did a thing that recontextualized everything. #jjw #jjwm

A WIP. It reads: "Of course, in the following days the Scholomance responds. Whether it is closing the door of the cafeteria, giving them worse food or more contaminated food than it used to be, giving them worse rewards in the snack machines, and even impeding them to turn up an essay, the school wasn’t letting them live easily until graduation came. Goro unfortunately is also included in these punishments, and more than once you can see him kicking the walls and yelling that it wasn’t his fault, why is it including him?!"

Kamoshida looked past his target ahead of them, saw Ren and Shiho walking together, and his mouth went tight, eyes narrowing. It only lasted a moment, before he put on a smile that was just this side of mean and called, in a voice meant to carry, “Well, well, our own little convict, showing up on time, for once. Making friends with all the girls, are you?” Oh. Oh, shit. Ren hadn’t thought about how it might look, him being friends with Ann, and now walking in with Shiho? Not to mention Haru and Makoto, assuming Kamoshida had eyes on either of them, or had otherwise noticed. “I-it’s not—” Shiho started weakly, voice too quiet. Because she was scared. Because Kamoshida was hurting her, was going to rape her—possibly not for the first time, he didn’t know—because he was a petty, tiny man with an ugly soul. Ren was done with seeing others getting hurt. He took two quick steps forward and to the side, putting himself between Shiho and Kamoshida, flashed Joker’s grin, and asked, “Jealous?” Kamoshida’s nostrils flared and Ren could see the rage in his eyes. “I will see you after school, Amamiya,” he said, voice low, “in the staff office in the practice building. Don’t be late.” Ren refused to flinch, even though he could guess what was going to happen in that office. He wasn’t particularly looking forward to it, but it would be worth it, if it kept Shiho from jumping off the roof. There was nothing Kamoshida could do to him, that he hadn’t already survived.

The final form of this arc in The Crow Cries at Midnight is slowly solidifying... The hardest part has been figuring out how to pace the buildup to Hollow Forest in terms of in-universe days. I think I'm almost there. Once I can actually tackle the dungeon, the rest should fall into place. #jjw

“Do you know Futaba has the café bugged?” Ren asked, because, well, that was, actually, how they’d started talking, and he knew the best lies were the ones that were kept close to the truth. “Ren,” Futaba whined against his shoulder, and Ren was relieved, because if she was whining, she wasn’t spiralling. Sojiro let out a harsh huff. “Yes,” he admitted, which didn’t really surprise Ren. It did seem to surprise Futaba, who twisted away from Ren to look at Sojiro with a startled, “Huh?!” Sojiro smiled, tired but warm, in that way he seemed to have reserved for Futaba’s wilder escapades, and then he reached over and, without any hesitation, picked up the little microphone and receiver hidden near the register, carefully holding it up only as far as the wire that plugged into the outlet hidden under the counter would allow. “I don’t pretend to know half the things you ask me to purchase,” he admitted, tone dry, while Futaba slumped back against Ren, “but I do know what surveillance equipment looks like, and you demanded to be walked over the day after I bought it, spent about two hours scurrying around when you thought I wasn’t paying attention, and then demanded I close the shop to take you home.” “Stealth failure, crit hit,” Futaba whispered. “Game over.” Ren huffed an amused sound. “Not game over, he’s an unbeatable boss,” he offered. She perked up at that. “Beatable at a later level?” “Nah, your skills impress him, so he becomes a necessary support NPC.” She laughed, ducking her head back against his shoulder, whole form shaking against him.

"Sumi—" Slowly starts Akira, unsure of the identity of the woman in front of him, and suddenly stops in his tracks when everyone here can hear the big inhale she takes at those two syllables. "Kasumi?" Akira is still confused about who's standing in front of him at the moment, his only giveway being the slight head nod she does without even noticing. "You're one of the festival's twins, right?" He wished he was as smooth as he thougth he was, wished he wasn't hurting this girl who visibly lost a lot but this is as soft as he can be with his curiosity showing his head. Two things happens at the same time: a flurry of orange hair turn his way, a heavy and furious glare pierces right throught his soul making each vertabrae of his spine shake in fear under such a fire and a deep — but short — burst of pain in his lowers ribs done by a swift elbow kick (An Akira's speciality) followed by a whisper-scream of his name. "OW! What was that for!" He asks Akira, turning his head so sharply he can hear his neck crack. The other boy in front of him is silent, trying to nudge Goro to look the other way with slight movements of his head. The girl, Kasumi, is crying. Her eyes widen in shock, tears sliding along her cheeks in deafening silence. Not only had Goro overstepped the line with his question, but he tumbled all the way across, destroying everything in his path. And judging by both Akira's and the other girl's glare, it was really bad. "A true devil are you, priest boy." She stabs his chest with her small finger, he can feel her nail indenting his skin in a small crescent under his clothes. "Always here when he's not needed or even wanted. You—" "Futaba, stop." The orange girl is interrupted in her venomous monologue by Kasumi, curling her long fingers around her wrist in an attempt to free Goro from her wrath. Her last words slowly sink in, the sound of his pumping blood buzzing in his ears. Loki begs for blood, for revenge, his hatred only growing stronger th…

And then he gently knocked their elbows together, a quiet reminder that he was there, and he had Ren's back. Ren knocked elbows back, and they stepped into the school together.
