I'm watching CCF tonight, and I'd forgotten that Miriam Margoyles plays Mrs. Beetle--amazing casting. πŸͺ΅

I definitely like Flora better, having seen the Cold Comfort Farm movie! πŸͺ΅ It was pretty charming 😁 My husband fell asleep in the middle, but it still did get some laughs from him at points #somethingnasty

Noting a similarity btw Cold Comfort Farm and Don Quixote, which are both using florid language and traditional forms and genres to mock and subvert same. Always here for mocking stuffy & self-important traditions. πŸͺ΅ 🫏

Chiming in that the movie version (with Kate Beckinsale and Ian McKellan) is delightful! Saw it last night and did a lot of cackling. Very faithful to the books, tho they did skip Claude entirely and sort of blur over Judith’s depression and psychiatric treatment. πŸͺ΅

I just finished and want to tell the dead feed it was delightful, enough that I’d read the books it was parodying πŸͺ΅

had always assumed these types first emerged in the 50s, if this was a century ago, how far back does twee devotion to St Francis go? πŸͺ΅
'Have you always admired St Francis?' asked Flora, as they sat one rainy afternoon in the little green parlour, towards the end of the first week. 'I mean, who told you about him, and who taught you to wear those shocking clothes?'
'I wanted to be like Miss Ashford. She kept the Blue Bird's Cage down in Howling for a month or two last sum-mer. I went in there to tea once or twice. She was very kind to me. She used to have lovely clothes - that is, I mean, they
weren't what you would call lovely, but I used to like them.
She had a smock - '
"Embroidered with hollyhocks,' said Flora, resignedly.
"And I'll bet she wore her hair in shells round her ears and a pendant made of hammered silver with a bit of blue enamel in the middle. And did she try to grow herbs?'
"How did you know?'
Never mind, I do know. And she talked to you about Brother Wind and Sister Sun and the wind on the heath, didn't she?'
'Yes... She had a picture of St Francis feeding the birds.
It was lovely.'
'And did you want to be like her, Elfine?'
β€’Oh, yes... She never tried to make me like her, of course, but I did want to be. I used to copy her clothes ...
'Yes, well, never mind that now. Go on with your read-ing'

Absolutely comforting, and thank you so much for organizing it! I would not have read this otherwise, and thanks for that, too. πŸͺ΅

Thank you for organizing! What a perfect read for this chaotic world. I've been reading it with my breakfast instead of the news I think I may be slightly saner for it. This book had so many layers - sweet, funny, rude, at times yikes, and surprisingly progressive! To think I almost didn't read it πŸͺ΅

I'm enough of a troll that I loved the active refusal to explain either of the big mysteries. Absolutely something I would do if I wrote a book like this.πŸͺ΅

Thanks so much to everyone who joined in on reading Cold Comfort Farm! Hopefully it brought some real comfort, or at least distraction. Next month we have Pale Fire! I pinned the sign-up post to the top of the #bsbookclub feed. In the meantime, let's think about what we're reading after that! πŸͺ΅πŸ“–

@renboyle.bsky.social - This book was so completely unexpected and took my mind off of seeing something nasty in the woodshed. I hadn't even heard of the writer or the book - such a great pick! I didn't post as much as I had hoped but it helped to know we were all reading together! Thank you! πŸͺ΅

also a challenge of the internet πŸͺ΅
One of the disadvantages of almost universal education was the fact that all kinds of persons acquired a familiarity with one's favourite writers. It gave one a curious feeling; it was like seeing a drunken stranger wrapped in one's dressing-gown.

Finished the book today and I'm glad I read it. I had no real idea what it was about going in. The cows especially amused me. πŸͺ΅

While I understand they don't really matter, I really wish we knew 1. The wrong done to Robert Poste 2. Flora's rights 3. What happened in the woodshed? 4. What happened to Speed Cop the First? πŸͺ΅
