It’s quiet again once he’s stepped through the thicket of the forest wall, all he can hear is the sound of his breathing and the pitter-patter of the rain around him… They are still there, however. He cannot see their faces, but they’re closer to the ground this time. The figures are all clad in black armor, the helms wide open to nothing but dark smoke that poured free in clouds, all of it glittered like that of the cold fog he saw in his dream.

They stand around him in neat, motionless lines, weapons down and shoulders broad. Slowly, as the Oracle crept through the unspeaking guards, he’s greeted with a pit, one shallow yet ripe with a fetor that twists knots in his stomach. A pit filled with disembodied hands and wet, fleshy bones of faceless innocents. There are limbs with muscle and no skin, heads with no familiar features—some missing eyes, others missing the other side of their face.

Mohan Ívarr had seen the burned bodies of the living… He has never seen a feeding pit.

Tell me about your first love.
I hooked onto that last part… The prompt originally sat as boring to me at first, but then I thought about it. I could tell a better story about love and loss better than any of the people in this room right now. You must come to the thought that each story you receive will be the same—someone owns a garden. A stranger lost his cat. Another fell in love with opera singer they have no chance with. One of these will be a lie, but mine won’t.

I had never seen trees until I was well into my adulthood. I wasn’t allowed into the cities of the wealthy until I had proven myself worthy by the eyes of the Hidden. I still wasn’t worthy, no matter how high up I was to them—I wasn’t allowed. And yet, here I stand and the flowers here are beautiful. All around me sat fountains of clean water and trees filled with birds singing to the never-ending blue above. I was never allowed to grace the city of the clouds, just stuck in the perpetual fog and smoggy streets of Zion until the day I die.
But she saved me. Called me her “Champion” as she pulled me from the line of Hunters with a glistening smile on her face. And they fought her, calling me nothing but “a two-bit child who fights for scraps.” She ignored them, her warm hands at my cheeks and eyes sparkling under the dirty lights. “You will be my Champion,” she said, “and I will make you perfect.”
I could hear sky cars whir by standing in her garden. The hedges before me kept them invisible to world beyond her home. They were riddled in vines laced with flowers and unlit decorative lights, patio furniture up against it for the “flair” of it all, I’d suppose. And yet, it was better than the dormitory back in Zion.

I feel sick seeing myself. I see a different body and a face of unexplained misery. I am not leaving you because I hate you, I’m leaving you because I need to fix myself.

To be happy again and only then can we rejoin.

“—You ignored me and my fears of how I perceived myself to feed into his paranoia?” There are no words that follow that slow build of a burning nose and wavering voice, brown eyes now bloodshot. Perhaps staying ignorant to the truth was the better option… the one that would have made everything in the end easier to finish.
