A free workshop in letterpress printing for children is being held on the Rosneath Peninsula this weekend. The event is part of the regular Saturday Studio series at Cove Park. Ruth Kirkby will share the fascinating art of letterpress printing, a relief printing technique that revolutionised communication in 15th-century Europe and shaped print for over 500 years. In a hands-on workshop, participants will explore traditional and DIY approaches to letterpress.

The first block is 9" tall by 6" wide, a nice bamboo Ikea rectangular cutting board engraved with just the Frog from Miles' drawing; the second is a square 3" wood plaque (from Michael's a while back so likely cheap pine?) and shows just the agents from Miles' art. The original art shows the person in a fullsize inflatable cartoon frog costume who faced off with, shamed, and caused retreat of literal evil government agents in Portland recently, facing off against two agents armed and surged in ways that indicate planned disrespect of human rights and their supposed peace keeping mission.

Did some quick test prints of the lasercut of @queermedieval.bsky.social's Portland Frog art, this time w/a Provisional Press (tabletop cylinder press) & Caligo safewash ink, to figure out plate mounting height before clamps+carpet tape overnight to flatten the larger acrylic plate's bend #DHmakes

Looked in my database of @virginiabookarts.bsky.social's type & printshop (reopening soon!) at least has enough to do a much smaller-text letterpress version (& maybe larger Bernhard Gothic Medium is a good next lasercut type project for me so I can do this poster size?)

A historical American Type Founders brochure spread that's been digitally edited to make it queer. It uses Bernhard Gothic Medium type and says in red, small, all caps: "Bernhard Gothic Medium Queer". Large type that's dark charcoal over an offset olive edge, with the 3 queerest words having a red-orange-purple gradient offset edge instead, says "Queer Type is the Product of Queer Craftsmen Who Take Great Pride in Doing Their Work WELL!" Small type at the bottom, all caps, red, says "American Type Founders Company Improved". The page has been digital edited to remove some of the noise from the see-through type on the page backs visible in the original (next image).

I'm not certain, but it seems worth trying? @shane.logoff.website knows more than me re:3D printing for letterpress; I've been working w/a friend lasercutting acrylic intaglio plates w/our but also a cheap home lasercutter–haven't heard back yet how well those printed (Sizzix craft press?)
