Gene Wolfe sounds like a Hideo Kojima villain but he actually wrote some books about a topless dude and invented Pringles

I doubt Wolfe would disagree with the following: BotNS is very much, but understandably not completely, concerned with Catholic/messianic ideas. There’s also parts that contradict strict doctrine, so it’s hardly a subtle apologetic or evangelistic.

Joke's on y'all though because I prefer Soldier in the Mist and sequels to the Sun Cycle. Although! Wolfe's retelling of the temptation of Christ in Severian's story is hands-down one of the most memorable scenes to me in all of fiction.

In other words, I vastly prefer Terra Ignota to BotNS at the moment. But who knows what the future might bring.

I couldn't finish BotNS. Really disliked the push-pull combo of the dreamy, radically open "it can mean almost anything you want" atmo & the uneasy feeling that the author is cryptically trying to sneak a Catholic allegory past me. But since TI is so dear to me, I'm willing to give BotNS another try

“'Severian,' she said. 'It can't be.' Hanging over the city like a flying mountain in a dream was an enormous building… I tried to speak, to deny the miracle even as I saw it; but before I could frame a syllable, the building had vanished like a bubble in a fountain…”

AI is an unreliable narrator pretending to be your robot buddy You think you’re in an Isaac Asimov story and you find out you’re in a Gene Wolfe story

AI is stupid, Exhibit 10^{100}

Screen shot of a Google search. The search is "where is nordheim germany" - spurred by a desire to identify an 18th century portrait.

The big "AI overview" at the top lies ! and says "There is no place called 'Nordheim' Germany that is a widely known city or town". It then proceeds to suggest that I have misspelled "Northeim" and proceeds to list lots of "facts" about "Northeim" with even more irrelevances to show me if I click on its search bar.

*Immediately* ! below that is the first *real* result, the Wikipedia page for the town of Nordheim, Baden-Württemberg, a real place in real Germany for real.

Sheesh.

The Alzabo from Gene Wolfe’s Book Of The New Sun - a creature with the ability to absorb the memories of its prey, so it can eat one member of a family, then convincingly mimic that person to lure the rest of the family to their doom. Chilling!

Gene Wolfe really started phoning it in after the fourth time he remixed the title but I guess he just really wanted to win that Hugo his way

uh y'all maybe wanna give a second thought to that name

"Liquid Death" "Doctor Death" water. yes, really.

Do I have enough time left to read the Gene Wolfe stuff in completion? I think I left off after finishing the Book of the Long Sun, iirc, but do not know how much more has been published. Or should I look at Thieves World finally?

I think BotNS is brilliant and I love it, but it’s also sometimes a bit cruel to the reader in how hard it is to follow, especially in its jumps over resolution, & constantly demanding one remember names/people from hundreds of pages earlier w/o a reminder. I made my goal be “like BotNS but kinder”.

You should probably read Zelazny's "Devil Car" at some point, if you haven't already. (And possibly Gene Wolfe's "Car Sinister", but the, uh, action there is mostly just in service to the pun.)
