As a person trying to get into the game industry, is it worth trying to branch out into every position (to see which fits me the most, for example, environment artist, vfx artist, technical artist, ux designer, programmer etc.) or should I work in the position that i already have experience at? Also how do I make my portfolio stand out from other candidates?

What are the best pieces to showcase in a portfolio, and what is an acceptable amount of verticies for a prop viewed upclose by the player (ex. A pocket watch). Should I also make a low poly version of a prop that will only be visible upclose and plays an important role?

Hi! I’m currently a student that’s working towards doing VFX for video games. I love real time effects and lighting the most, but what should I include in my portfolio? Any general tips for VFX artists in game dev in general?

why do people use zbrush over blender for sculpting game assets. can same stuff be done inside blender?
I would appreciate tutorials or any course with blender for props sculpting and baking normal to lowpoly version. please share 🙏

What’s the best way to stop my mesh materials from pixelating? I have around 80% texel density, when exporting from Blender to Substance Painter, but it still is pixelated

10 minute Vertical Slice or 30 minute greybox prototype for pitching to publishers?

In the vertical slice every asset is finalised, in the prototype everything is finalised except all of the environment art.

I understand UV mapping, unwrapping, and other basic things but I have little to no grasp on UDIMS, uv groups (??), tiles, etc. How important are these processes when working on a game? Also, does anyone perhaps have any tips on where to learn? Thank you!

I’ve got an art degree, and a pretty decent understanding of 3D Modeling as well as 2D concept art. I’m looking to go into the industry as an environment prop modeler, but don’t quite feel experienced enough. Would looking at graduate programs (US) make sense for me? Or am I better off finding online resources like the Indie Game Academy? Thank you!

What if you're Not an Art Degree Graduate But Rather Self-taught 3D artist, you are good at it and you're still improving yourself.
when applying for jobs most of the time you get asked for a resume/CV. being self-taught and no work experience yet means you don't have much to put in a resume.
what do you think one should do ( make a resume with contact information, your specialty and the tools you use )
and does not having one hurt your chance, because you'll be submitting nothing but your portfolio link.
plus any advice you can give regarding this.
thank you.

What’s the best way to retopologise a hard-surface prop? Decimating in ZBrush either feels like still too many polys or too different a shape, and doing it manually never seems to get me great results. Am I missing a trick here?

I see a lot of props in portfolios that have a lot of details. Like a radio with tiny details. Are those kinda of small details like charger plugs or volumen areas really needed in production? Or should just focus on do a game ready piece with as much details as posible to the real reference and make it low poly or a mid poly could work?

I notice a lot of studios don't tend to post position details about their maternity leave benefits (moreso I see details on general parental leave which usually refers more to paternity leave). Is this something taboo to ask in an interview? I worry that asking it would make the hiring team think that I am planning to get pregnant soon, when I am just trying to plan best for the future. What is your opinion on this?

I am currently in my 4th year in the game industry as a 3D Modeller. The earning is decent enough to make a living but I kinda want to earn extra with freelance jobs as I am married with one child. But it’s hard to land any project. I have tried UpWork & Fiverr but still couldn’t get any. If any of you guys have any tips or any other site that I could try, it would be really helpful 🙏

Has anyone ever found a job because of a speculative application when there were no relevant job openings available at a company? Does it even make sense to send such applications?

If I get really excited about the layout side of creating cool spaces/levels/missions for players to enjoy, what title am I going for? Is that exclusively level design? What would be the tasks given to someone like a level artist instead? Thanks GameDev Twitter - y'all are awesome.

My current job pays very well and I'm afforded a level of stability that is coveted in this industry. But I also feel trapped because of this, doing work that feels less like art and more like a day job. I want to work on more exciting and creatively fulfilling projects at other studios, I just don't know if the tradeoff will be worth it. I don't know if working on my dream project would eventually turn into "just a day job" too.
Anyone with experience moving from boring work to exciting work care to weigh in? If you took a pay cut, was it worth it?

Not much of question, but rather a worry. I work as an Environment Artist currently, but for a really old game in a really old engine. My knowledge and skills from this work aren't really relevant to all the modern 3D art engines and tools now, that I feel behind the industry to the point where I could change to a new studio and feel out of my depth. Maybe this is imposter syndrome in disguise? Unsure.

OK this is a serious question. why is it so rare for Game studios to hire from outside of games? like animators from film or modelers from film etc. the skills overlap immensely. it's not like Timing and spacing are different if you're animating for a game compared to a tv series
