What are you reading today? What are you like to drink while you read? I am enjoying my usual Iced Shaken Espresso and Empire of the Summer Moon, which I started the other day. This is such a great book. I am having a hard time putting it down. #coffeeoftheday #histbookchat #history

Recommend @iainmacgregor1.bsky.social's The Hiroshima Men - much more than a tale of August 6, 1945, weaving the story of key individuals involved in building, delivering, and surviving the bomb. Also recommend reading John Hersey's original article: www.newyorker.com/magazin…. #histbookchat

As the King reminded us all that George Washington was a ‘rebel commander’ I have picked up Castex’s Diplomacy in the American Revolution. I have a lot of Revolutionary reading to do at some point of these 250th anniversary years! 🇺🇸 📚 #histbookchat

1000 years of Annoying the French - History done right. Immensely readable and entertaining. Billy Boyle - Great mystery/fiction series that has so many great books in it. A Dead man in Trieste - What the world was like on the cusp of WW1 with a mystery tossed in for extra. #histbookchat

#histbookchat #sinology #WW2TV Onto Chapter 2 of "Grains of Conflict" by Jennifer Yip. Already shining a new light on the Sino-Japanese conflict: A unique variation of total war, China’s main effort was surviving modern war from an agrarian base, to feed its armies over a long period — #logistics.

One of my favorite books I read awhile back was Operation Paperclip. This is an area I didn’t know much about and this book opened my eyes to how the government used this German scientists to move out military and aerospace industries forward. open.substack.com/pub/jef…. #histbookchat

Finally starting to read this in its entirety, having previously enjoyed extracts here and there. Someone really ought to repeat his route next year to mark its 230th anniversary! #HistBookChat #IrishHistory

I was sorting through a pile of books when I came across this magazine from 1988, containing my first paid for article. 1988! #OldGit Still, it was a subject I returned to years later and hopefully will again. #HistBookChat #DienBienPhu #FrenchIndochina

Shifting cargo handling from SE England to Western ports that Different cargo - e.g., with limited shipping capacity, it made more sense to import finished steel instead of raw iron that required different port infrastructure As a bonus, I learned a new word, bathetic #Histbookchat

I have been after a copy of this for some time. Written in 1917, it offers a unique satirical take on the Poilu. Time to find out if all those hours on Duolingo have paid off. #histBookChat #PhotoFriday #poilu #fww

#HistBookChat offerings for this week..... I've not read Keegan's The Price of Admiralty yet, but his Six Armies in Normandy is a classic study of the campaign. One book on the subject I have no hesitation in recommending (apart from my own - obviously!) is After D-Day by James J Carafano.

Historical fiction this week for #histbookchat. The Safekeep by Yarl Van Der Wouden is set in Zwolle in 1961. Beautifully written and fascinating insight into the Dutch experiences during and after the SWW.

Its that time again for a spooky nonfiction book recommendation. This one is based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. If you want a book that reads less like a textbook and more like stepping into 1692 Salem, then this is the book to read. youtu.be/YUi5tZyNYqc?... #histbookchat #history
