Still plugging away at this storyboard sequence instead of making pixel art for Blackmask to visualize the script for a sense of the pacing. I still worry the scenes go too long but, I'll worry about that after my programmer brings me news of his level design progress.
Revisiting this design for a cat lad, who I'll name, Nail. The initial marker sketch was to demonstrate cats in the world of Blackmask, wielding long extended claws instead of traditional swords. The later pencil sketches started exploring this design as his own character more.
Another bunch of sketches of Claudia the Cat Witch. Initially she was an idea for a general cat mage enemy for Blackmask but things turned out different.
Pig villager designs for the world of Blackmask.
I wanted to design them in a way to represent their backgrounds and classes in their life. Making something themed to the Three Little Pigs is a good start.
Pig Bomber. A pile of sketches of a possible Blackmask enemy that would reuse Nad's round body sprite. Much of this is also figuring out a new gang of pirates for Cole to contend with.
Idea sketches of weapons Monks and Martial Artists can equip in the world of Blackmask. Cole and Monks equip boots and footwear for extra damage or altered skills. Some boots grant abilities such as altered jumps heights, new kick attacks, or elemental damage.
colored concept of the owl enemy for Blackmask.
I'm vibing with the ninja stuff I'm tilting the design toward and getting more comfortable leaving the ink illustrations with flat color compositions and minimal gradients.
Cole's blue jacket is enchanted with space magic by his mentor, Madame Blackmask to fold and morph into his Merchant Tent where he sells his wares and lives in shelter. Despite it's size, the inside of the tent holds a moderately sized shadow realm to store Cole's items in a number of rooms.
Over the years, Madame Blackmask refines Cole from a starving thief to a confident merchant with a sense of purpose and self-worth!
In her passing of old age, she leaves Cole
an enchanted coat, her old spell book, and the meager fortune of her shop, as a memento to Cole seek his fortune.
Madame Blackmask is a mysterious potion seller who adopts Cole as her assistant and bodyguard.
After finding the orphaned Cole bruised at the bank of a river, she heals him with the potions she sells.
Repaying her kindness, Cole stays with her, is adopted, and given the name "Blackmask".
A bunch of sketches I made in my sketchbooks showcasing the weasel bandits in Blackmask. I wanted to make a larger illustration series of Cole verses the enemies who would be in the game's demo. I already made the Fox bandits but I want to make more down the line when I'm more put together.
Colored older ink designs of the Greentail Fox Pirates in Blackmask. I designed them after I drew and animated their sprites, but I wanted turnarounds I to use for larger illustrations. I'm not 100% sure how much I'll use the gunner but, they do go with the pirate stuff.
Try to score a mental victory for myself by making this cutscene layout for Blackmask. It's not final but I'm glad I pushed myself to finish more pixel art. #pixelart
Snake Enemy Concepts for Blackmask. Lot of experimenting with how they can work as an enemy character with various weapons and moves. Plus some ideas of making them larger anacondas and all that.
Older illustrations of monkey character that would've been a Blackmask enemy. The first illustration is too adorable to fight, so I gotta rework it later. The second ink drawing looks too much like a protagonist so this won't stick for my purpose.
One more sketch of this not as pointy paladin. This time she's an archer. I'd say I'm interested in the idea of a full armor mystery lady character. Plus, I haven't considered paladins or clerics in the Blackmask world before.
I wanted to have different cat designs for the different nationalities and backgrounds in the world of Blackmask.
Many have similarities and agreements with each other and many have vast differences against on another.
I had made some Piggy Army sketches for Blackmask at an earlier time. I drew them on my Samsung Galaxy Note phone before I broke it. Later finished the ideas in Procreate before I lost that iPad.
Ferret Knight
A sketch idea for a "level 2" variant of the weasel bandit enemy in Blackmask. He'd likely have similar moves to teh weasel, with more HP and Defense and different moves with a new weapon. Unlike the bandits, the ferret knight would be allied with one of the ruling mustelid kingdoms.
