#UK universities are totally and completely bankrupt. They rely on foreign kids paying 3x fees to subsidise domestic kids. It’s the current business model.

A great roundtable about how we teach and assess public history in UK universities today. I definitely agree that it’s easier to do public history if your specialism is the country in which you work. Trying to find the Italian angle for UK institutions is often a challenge!

How do we teach public history today? Pleasure to join @julialaite.bsky.social, @ktrcarpenter.bsky.social & Anna Maguire in this roundtable for @historyworkshop.org.uk. Image from @qmul.bsky.social qHeritage project with @museumofthehome.bsky.social academic.oup.com/hwj/advance-...

It follows other similar policies 'we need to secure the borders so we will lower the number of students coming here temporarily and funding UK higher education with their hefty fees.'

Because many things in my life now are seen through the lens of Dr Seuss's books, this page from 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' seems very #UKHE appropriate these days.
'The Waiting Place' from Dr Seuss's 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!'. It reads:

Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come,
or a plane to go or the mail to come,
or the rain to go or the phone to ring,
or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.

Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night

or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.

Everyone is just waiting.

I don't think that there is this level of strategic thinking behind this, but if you wanted to inextricably absorb UK higher education into shared EU systems of tertiary teaching and research then one thing you would target is a closer alignment of UK tuition structures with similar European ones

am not being metaphorical here. had shoulder injury. anyway, the workload is supposedly "normal" (UK university here), but it is seriously unhealthy and unsustainable, and typically younger and more women teach large courses. the ones in power have smaller cozy seminars. guess who burns out.

So Advance UK decided to march to an Asylum seekers hotel in Newcastle 100 of them turned up. 3000 people turned up not to let them . They forget that on 13 November 1967, Newcastle University gave Dr Martin Luther King an honorary degree; the only UK university to do so during his lifetime.
