Computational models are limited in physics. There are cases that are computationally incomplete (not Turing-computable). I guess most complex systems are like that that is why physicists use simplified models and approximation methods. There are no general algorithms to solve arbitrary equations.

It's almost a crime how we design complex systems and expect people to remember them after a week off. Player memory isn't a save file. I ended up treating this thought like a proper investigation, and this article came out of it.

The way to win in politics (& life) is to just keep plugging away. Complex systems with random elements change unexpectedly. There are ups & downs. You will feel hopeful sometimes & hopeless sometimes. But your best odds of winning are to just keep doing smart things irrespective of how things seem.

We seem to mostly swing widely on a pendulum, w/mainstream views converging to the extremes. This might be due to our over-reliance on reductionism & avoidance of #complex systems framing. Still, we can learn from work like this that suggests we view & describe the world how it's experienced by us.

Not just bsky! It's example one-billion of mediocre techbros sitting on top of "weirdos" or other "undesirables" creating something, and the tech bros somehow convincing themselves that they made it themselves and the "weirdos" are ruining it.

So a few folks have asked for more information. On the first part: The Internet and telephone systems of today are codependent and the Internet is an incredibly fragile thing that constantly breaks in hundreds of different ways on the daily because of the scale of it. 

Support of this is seen as a cost center and is cut to the bone as far as humanly possible without it visibly failing.  Anyone that works in a NOC will tell you that 24/7 globally, some major part of the internet, somewhere, is busted and waiting on an oncall engineer to fix. 

So the least possible number of people are used to maintain one of the most complex systems to ever exist and it’s on fire 90% of the time and the only reason why anything works is because someone got texted about it and fixed it while eating supper. 

Your phones? All extensions of the internet now. Cell phones, land lines,  99% of what you see is some flavor of Voice Over IP carried on the INternet. Even Land Mobile Radios and walkie talkies are VOIP now.  Even that old copper line that grandma has is converted somewhere. 

And furries? Furries have always run the internet since bulletin board days. Furries had a dedicated ISP before the White House got internet service. They are also heavily present in the amateur radio scene. 

Between the two, a lot of furries turned their hobby in tech into day jobs in the early days of the field, then trained their friends to get jobs at the places they worked, who were also furries, and that’s continued for 30 years now, across the globe."

Transfer Learning and Permutation‐Invariance Improving Predicting Genome‐Wide, Cell‐Specific and Directional Interventions Effects of Complex Systems

SETComp, a transfer learning model based on permutation-invariance, is pre-trained on single-compound intervention data and fine-tuned on complex system (e.g., natural products) data. The model achieves up to 93.86% accuracy on complex system-cell-gene association predictions, outperforming the baseline by up to 27.59%. It shows strong performance in in vitro validation (88.65% accuracy) and demonstrates potential in biomedical applications such as mechanism discovery and drug repositioning. Abstract With the rise of precision medicine, single-drug treatments alone may not meet its demands. However, extensive data and deep learning models exist for single compounds. Leveraging transfer learning to use this data for predicting complex system intervention effects is promising. In this study, a deep model based on permutation-invariance is used as the core module, pre-trained on a large amount of single-compound intervention data in cell lines, and fine-tuned on a small amount of complex system (like natural products) intervention data in cell lines, resulting in a predictive model, Set Embedding and Transfer learning model for Complex systems (SETComp). The two versions of SETComp achieved an accuracy of 93.86% and 92.70%, respectively, on the complex system-cell-gene association test set, improving by 5.82% to 27.59% compared to the baseline. When predicting the intervention effects of those complex systems the model has never encountered before, the accuracy increased by up to 24.83% compared to the baseline. In the in vitro validation, up to 88.65% of the predictions are confirmed to be correct, and the model's output showed a significant positive correlation with the real-world foldchange. SETComp's potential in various biomedical scenarios is further observed, achieving good performance in applications such as mechanism uncovering and drug repositioning.
