People can migrate to these PDSes to avoid the BS (pun intended) of Bluesky proper. The neat thing is that you can still interact with people on the Bluesky PDS while on, say, the Northsky PDS!

Unfortunately, the Bluesky devs have done an abysmal job at explaining this decentralized design to its users. Most people think it’s simply a centralized site competing with Twitter/X. What are the non-Bluesky parts (PDSes) of the ATmosphere? Examples: - Blacksky - Northsky - Eurosky

The big draw for Bluesky for early adopters was its ease of use and decentralized nature. Mastodon already existed but is complicated to use. The Bluesky devs decided to create its own network (called the ATmosphere). Bluesky is technically the largest part of the whole ATmosphere.

Oh nice, you switched PDSes! I keep telling people about them but I haven’t switched myself. I’m a huge procrastinator. 🥴😂 Did it take long in terms of just waiting or did you have to fill out some forms and such?

i know of it, never used it. seems good if you just need somewhere to host your json, but it doesnt help with local dev since atproto oauth rejects .test redirects (the laravel default) proto.broker relays the callback to your local app, so you can get a confidential client without a tunnel
