Ilyoplax tansuiensis peforming asymmetric waving, found in Korea. ๐Ÿšจ Exciting new crab preprint! A Japanese team found that sideways walking only evolved once! Maybe carcinization itself is necessary but not sufficient to go sideways? When it's lost, the species that go forward have alternate anti predation behaviors. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿฆ‘๐Ÿฆ€ www.biorxiv.org/content/1โ€ฆ.

Evolution of sideways locomotion in crabs

The evolutionary change in the mode of locomotion is often a major evolutionary event, triggering diversification. Sideways locomotion is a defining feature of true crabs (Brachyura) and may have cont...

Everything comes to an end sometime. I've run out of good hermit photos, so I'm pausing the Daily Hermit posts. Here's a GrainyHand, deciding whether it's safe to come out of the shell. He's halfway there. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
A hermit crab in the palm of my hand; a little over the width of one finger. He's in a bluish shell, opening upward; he's holding both chelipeds in the opening and there's also one leg visible, up against the edge. The rest is hidden. GrainyHand hermits choose shells into which they can retreat completely, showing no sign of occupancy, so this one is already feeling more confident.
The chelipeds are brown, with closely-packed pale blue raised dots. On the outside of the shell, on the left, there's a limpet.

Hey @jopabinia.bsky.social - check out this marvelous wall relief at the entrance gates to the fishing port of A Coruรฑa in northern Spain- culture of the city places quite a lot of importance on sea inverts ๐Ÿฆ€ ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ™

How ghost crabs ๐Ÿ‘ป๐Ÿฆ€ run so fast ๐Ÿƒ: At top speed, they push with their trailing legs (L if crab running R) like a vaulter's pole, leaping into the air! Their leading legs (R if crab running R) don't "step". They use those legs like skis ๐ŸŽฟ, bouncing off the sand! doi.org/10.1242/jeb....
