Fave epigraph I've seen in a while: "Find the others." (In Dana's obsolete duplication tech guide.) As a callback to @eireannmor.bsky.social's recent art ("you are not alone" bsky.app/profile/eire...) now I know what to print as my additive overlay on your #BuildingBookLabs25 print swap screenprint:

2 resources I mentioned in my "Zines x Values Charters" workshops yesterday: the amazing visual design of the Electric Zine Maker✨ tool; & Jacqui Sahagian's “How the Praxis Charter Helped Me Put Out a Fire” [a literal home fire]: scholarslab.lib.virginia.…. #BuildingBookLabs25

#BuildingBookLabs25 is such a good gathering—extra appreciated being near booklabbers+hearing advice given our community printshop is being shutdown; +how many see SJ advocacy as part of BookLabs 💜 There was a print swap! 🤩 I have so many cool new prints to hang! (People wanted copies of my work!?)

Haunting artist book by @transbookhistory.bsky.social, progresses from "Mary Ann Waters is a free Black woman" print via stages of evolving prints to a full archival mention of a Black trans woman that misgenders+unfrees her, shows previous prints selected the true text from that #BuildingBookLabs25

Took @eireannmor.bsky.social's lofi screenprinting #BuildingBookLabs25 workshop! How to make big, interesting posters w/o washout station nor exposure unit; possible to print on things from the recycling pile; can ignore registration & just focus on making art to help us think about text #DHmakes

Took #BuildingBookLabs25 workshop today by @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social on running printing spaces in difficult times (especially navigating: someone wanting support printing something you think is hate speech but your uni/funders don't; people angry at you for something someone printed w/your press)+

Haven't travelled to a conference since pre-pandemic, so haven't had to say this for years: I am only extroverted online, and shy in person, but love meeting people. Please do say hi if you're at #BuildingBookLabs25 & want to chat! I'm in the white-grey tshirt w/red "queer bibliography" text today+

#DHmakes ish event tag: #buildingbooklabs25 (Tues-Wed) for illumination (@leoba.bsky.social), collab broadside prints, lofi screenprinting (@eireannmor.bsky.social), zinemaking w/me, needlework, papermaking, teaching via typewriters (@isabellaviega.bsky.social) + BookBeetle (@josefbeery.bsky.social)

Prepping for my workshop "Make your own Illuminated Initial" next week at the BookLab Symposium sponsored by @skeuomorphpress.org and I am EXCITED

Photo of a stack of handmade paper printed with outlines of large initial letters
screenshot of a slide that reads: Make your own Illuminated Initial, Dot Porter, Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, Building Book Labs Symposium, May 20, 2025. The large initials in the title are colored Red and Blue. All the text is in a medieval gothic font.
Screenshot of a slide that reads:
Header: Why a workshop on making illuminated initials?
To provide insight into historical bookmaking practices
To illustrate the labor involved in the work
To present a good entry point for the study of medieval manuscripts. Because…
Illumination is neat and pretty!
To give students a fun, creative method for learning, and they have something to take away and share with friends
