The visit to Miles's island for Animal Crossing: New Digital Humanities with @emgrumbach.bsky.social is up there among my 5 fondest memories from deep pandemic days. 🥰 #DHmakes

also, since it is Hildegard von Bingen's feast day today, I feel the need to remind everyone of my Hildegard section of my animal crossing medievalisms

An animal crossing island rep with round glasses behind a standee decorated to look like the manuscript illustration of Hildegard with her divine inspiration tentacles above her head. there's a custom design of Hildegard's cosmic egg to the right of the standee.

Love seeing subversive pseudo-ad art at the Palo Alto train station, like this one for Meta glasses. #DHmakes
Flyer with Meta logo at the top and slogan "let's ruin another generation of girls". Image shows a bunch of sunglasses models including "the upskirter" (if your man buys these, it's time to leave), "the handjobber" (sEMG wristband), "the perv" (record girls when they're not looking), "the incel" (by ray-ban and meta) and "the pedo" (Epstein would have loved em)

Some food for thought outside a park in Berkeley yesterday. What things can you create and share in public to make people pause and think? #DHmakes
A sign in a bush, "What do you think is possible that you didn't yesterday?"
A sign in a bush, "Notice how you are different from this time last year."
A sign in a bush, "What did you not say today?"
A sign in a bush "What moment or person today made you feel most understood? How'd it feel?"

Quick and silly projects. When we first moved back, I asked for some craft kits for Christmas to give me a low-key way back into crafting. A got me a 4-pack of crochet kits. I made the final two over the past week — one for M and one for A. The others are in my office. #DHMakes

I love how much more Pride the very beginnings of people's Pride month projects in the craft feed are than the fully realized beige corporate Pride embarrassments available in stores this month. 🥰🌈 #DHmakes

Printing day: some proofs of 1 thing that needs some relayout before further printing; & both layers of this Addinizio poem (1st layer took 30min to print; 2nd took 4hrs & could have taken 2 more, mostly alignment fixes but some hunting non-damaged letters; but it was time to clean up) #DHmakes

Spending much of the day in a strategic planning meeting, so I thought I'd channel the ghost of Project Bamboo for a little wisdom and perspective. Also hoping to make progress on my embroidery dataviz of texts and emails to and from my ex. (50 words = 1 chain stitch, knot = 1 text). #DHmakes
Quinn wearing sandals, colorful dot shorts, and a shirt with a bamboo pattern along with a woven shawl, black hat, and blue and green mask. Right panel is hourglass shapes with embroidered knots and chain stitches in brown and purple.

Always inspired by your #DHMakes work! And I was able to incorporate my #ByteSizedPedagogy materials as an example for this group before we went to the Makerspace.

Set the rest of the Kim Addonizio poem today instead of leaving it as just the end; used 2nd galley measured to fit text w/in circle on 1st. Noticed trans reading of the title ("To the woman crying uncontrollably in the next stall"); I wish there was more of the poem's ready deep solidarity #DHmakes

STS 2025 has been delightful! Today’s glimmers: 1) people interacting with my show-and-tell & 2) visiting the Common Press to use the 1899 Washington Hoe Cast Iron Handpress and the Vandercook to print these conference souvenirs! #WickedTextual #STS2025 #DHMakes

Paper on bookshelf that reads: “The true novelty would be a new medium that did not refer for its meaning to other media at all. For our culture, such mediation without remediation seems to be impossible. -Jay David Bolter & Richard Grusin Remediation: Understanding New Media” in multiple typefaces
Lime green paper with “textual” printed in silver ink in front of two books including a brown leather book with a gold dragon and a green book with the word “Wicked” written in gold foil

Teaching “DH in the Classroom” at DREAM Lab @pricelab.bsky.social was a rewarding experience. Fantastics students, the best collaborator @betovargas.github.io, and friends old and new. We covered a huge range of topics, but here’s a peek at the game we made in the #DHMakes unit.

3D printed dice and wood game board laser cut in a honeycomb pattern.

1st attempt lasercutting letterpress type, using 1/4" acrylic+ will add wood mounts to type high. Bungee Inline font w/interior lines widened so ink doesn't get stuck in them. #DHmakes +
Photo of a clear acrylic sheet with a brown paper backing in a lasercutter bed. The shape of an alphabet letter in a chunky font with a line temoved from its center is being cut out with a laser. The sheet is already cut with many other letters.
Photo of clear, quarter inch thick acrylic cut into the shapes of the alphabet letters that spell "zines", in a chunky font with a line removed from its center is being cut out with a laser, on a background of yellow construction paper
Photo of clear, quarter inch thick acrylic cut into the shape of the alphabet letter Z, in a chunky font with a line removed from its center; it's being held up for the camera, with a blurry makerspace in the background

Today's #DHmakes I tried typesetting around a can lid for a circular effect, inspired by @jsench.bsky.social's photo of doing this. Text is from end of the Kim Addonizio poem cited at top, which reliably gives me frission ("listen / I love you joy is coming") +
Photo, digitally flipped for legibility, of an in-progress letterpress typesetting project using a yellow plastic jar of to set some of the tote in a half circle pattern by placing it along the curve of the lid. There is small metal italic tote at the top that says the title and author of the poem the rest of the text is a quote from, Kim Addonizio's "To the woman crying uncontrollably in the next stall". The rest of the type says "if you think nothing & no one can / listen I love you joy is coming"
Screenshot of a poem by Kim Addonizio, "TO THE WOMAN CRYING UNCONTROLLABLY IN THE NEXT STALL": "If you ever woke in your dress at 4 a.m. ever closed your legs to someone you loved opened them for someone you didn't moved against a pillow in the dark stood miserably on a beach seaweed clinging to your ankles paid good money for a bad haircut backed away from a mirror that wanted to kill you bled into the back seat for lack of a tampon if you swam across a river under rain sang using a dildo for a microphone stayed up to watch the moon eat the sun entire
ripped out the stitches in your heart because why not if you think nothing & no one can / listen I love you joy is coming"

I was irked that the back of my kid custody / sleep location top was so blank, so I made a spreadsheet for this year of how many texts I've gotten from my ex, how many emails, and the wordcount. Best part is, instead of getting annoyed at the messages, I now smile & add them to the data. 😈 #DHmakes

Got fully caught up on both my daily data embroidery projects this weekend: where I sleep / how many kids my girlfriend and I have custody of (different design each month, April was flowers), and the adults I see each day (spiral). #DHmakes

Four embroideries, a calendar and some squares with French knots, some hearts, and some flowers on a blue shirt
A spiral with different embroidery stitches in different colors
