New York City’s outgoing mayor has directed police to issue more civil summonses, sparking concerns the practice is undermining a city reform. Will the next mayor take a different path?

Abughazaleh has been roughed up by DHS employees multiple times, but the only prosecution is against her.

She and five other protesters face up to eight years in prison if convicted.

To recap: Trump is spending money Congress never appropriated to pay federal employees with guns, and cutting programs and grants even when Congress has appropriated funds. They literally have a contingency fund for SNAP that they are refusing to use. No Speaker has done more to weaken Congress.

Last week, we reported on the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who were supposed to have the right to vote this year — noncitizens with legal status who'd been enfranchised by a 2021 reform, until a court struck down the reform this spring. This week, we also published that article in Spanish:

This is a tangible example of how regulatory agencies matter to people in practical ways. The CFPB had been investigating and blocking these abuses of the law, until Russ Vought and Trump stopped them from doing so. www.bloomberg.com/graphic….
Outside Chicago, a father of seven was too embarrassed to tell his family last Christmas that they might lose their home to foreclosure. A debt collector was demanding he pay almost $30,000 to settle a $10,000 second mortgage he said he hadn’t heard about in 15 years.

Another homeowner, near San Francisco, faced foreclosure this year over a $121,000 second mortgage — even though he’d received a tax document from his lender in 2009 showing the debt had been canceled.

And in suburban Washington, DC, a couple got a demand for more than $86,000 in back interest on a loan for which they hadn’t received any monthly statements in nearly a decade, despite laws that preclude any such interest charges during periods when regular statements weren’t sent.

I'm not saying Trump is an authoritarian who would lock up reporters for investigating his party, I'me just saying his party members think that.

cool cool cool cool cool

Screenshot of ProPublica story that reads “Newby declined multiple interview requests from ProPublica and even had a reporter escorted out of a judicial conference to avoid questions. He also did not answer detailed written questions. The court system’s communications director and media team did not respond to multiple requests for comment or detailed written questions.
When ProPublica emailed questions to Newby’s daughter, the North Carolina Republican Party’s communications director, Matt Mercer, responded, writing that ProPublica was waging a “jihad” against “NC Republicans,” which would “not be met with dignifying any comments whatsoever.”
“I’m sure you’re aware of our connections with the Trump Administration and I’m sure they would be interested in this matter,” Mercer said in his email. “I would strongly suggest dropping this story.” “

This is so dumb. H1-B visas are a way the US has hired extraordinary people from around the world. Academic job markets are fiercely competitive, and foreign applicants are not paid less as departments generally follow disciplinary and departmental standards. www.theguardian.com/us-ne….
“Universities across the country are importing foreign workers on H-1B visas instead of hiring Americans who are qualified and available to do the job,” said DeSantis in a statement. “We will not tolerate H-1B abuse in Florida institutions. That’s why I have directed the Florida Board of Governors to end this practice.”

However, it’s unclear how such a move could be carried out. States do not have authority to revoke federal visas, and US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations prohibit firing employees based on immigration status.

ICYMI today: Virginia Democrats passed step 1 (of many) of their middecade redistricting scheme through the state House, 51-42. Next up: the Senate this week. (And then: they'll have to retain House Tuesday, then pass it again thru both chambers in January, then win a referendum in the spring.)

I wish ppl weren't so quick to attack. I spend all day boosting local races: I've been posting on GA multiple times a day, hyping turnout #s + promoting our big story: boltsmag.org/georgia-publ... I didn't name Atlanta in quick list of mayoral races... drawn from my own list that mentions Atlanta.

It’s honestly just disrespectful the way @boltsmag.org treats Georgia.

Important redistricting news tonight: Ohio is the rare state that *HAS* to redraw its congressional map this year, & the GOP was mulling a map that'd lock in a 13-2 delegation. (It's 10-5 now, though 2-3 of the Dem seats very fragile.) Politico is reporting that Ohio Republicans have...
