Around 500mn people, globally, live without power, most being in sub-Saharan Africa. Only 16% of Malawians have energy. In response, VC firm Acumen launched the Hardest-to-Reach Initiative, to power 70mn people via off-grid solar power. Acumen has raised almost $250mn. www.forbes.com/sites/curren...

Absolute worst journal experience of my life with @environmentalpol.bsky.social Two years, four revisions, now rejection. One reason cited by EIC is "small number of interviews... limits the rigor of the empirical work". There were 26 interviews, it's qual work. Never raised by reviewers.

I'm assuming something about geothermal and then something complicated about the way fossil vs renewables are charged but not like... Onslow

They could do it with more solar, wind, and energy storage.

Why Don’t Data Centers Use More Green Energy?

Reliance on fossil fuels is almost unavoidable — at least for now.

In this case it was a bandwagon. It was a heartwarming comedy about a scientist who finds a penguin stowaway on his flight from Antarctica. March of the Penguins & Happy Feet just came out so penguin scripts were hot. His was actually good, so it sold several times, even after the hype died down.

STORIES FROM MOTHER JONES AND ITS PARTNERS

Happy Climate Week! We’ve got good and bad news.

Let's start with the good: President Donald Trump can hate on wind and solar all he wants, but he can’t stop the global march toward cleaner energy. Investment in renewable power rose by 10 percent in the first half of 2025, the Guardian reports, and, in spite of Trump’s cynical efforts, 19 American states and 304 large companies—together representing nearly two-thirds of US corporate revenues—remain committed to “net zero.”

“This is a dismantling of efforts in the United States on climate science, and in fact, in large swaths of environmental science. And I don’t think that people know that. This is wholesale destruction, what’s proposed.”

‘Wholesale destruction’: Government shutdown or not, critical science programs are at risk

The Trump administration has proposed devastating cuts to federal Earth and climate science programs, and a government shutdown could give them an opportunity to begin implementing those cuts.

My mother in law just got a Copper range (electric oven, induction cooktop, battery-in-the-bottom so no wiring upgrade required). Results: (1) she *loves* it; and (2) the crew that installed her cabinets and the range were impressed (& mildly shocked) that you can just plug it into a wall outlet

The United Nations should relocate #ClimateWeek to Geneva in Switzerland. If you cannot do it for the General Assembly, have the theater here on the Continent.

I feel like this is a place where we need a little capitalism -- products/services to make the shifting of batteries from car to house easier.

Not sure what news to be more gloomy about today: (1) Public lands being opened up for mining (2) Increased investment in coal to the tune of $625 million (3) Rolling back clean energy tax credits

The car's going great - regularly getting 450km range from the new battery. Our old EV battery hasn't been commissioned for home electricity storage yet because apparently the 50 year old electrics in my house need a lot of attention first. That's the bit I'm most excited about...

Reminds me of the deep influence of oil and gas money in right wing politics even in New York where the industry is small relative to Texas or California.

He has united refining, which has an oil refinery and about 300 gas stations (“kwik fill” is one of their brands)
