Kitten update: they seem to be settling in well in the garage set up, and have come out of their hiding spots to sleep, hang out, and play. They’re all using the litter box (I’ve only had to clean up pee once; that’s pretty impressive for stray kittens!). Only one of them seems to like the cat bed.
