The first time I heard of Baroque, I thought it was one of those fake videogames. The kind that are meant to make you wonder how such a weird game could play and make you want to play it. I didn't know it was real and seeing footage of it and the story I still can't believe it's real.

The good news is that the world today is full of brilliant Darger-esque outsider artists weaving impossibly baroque prose and comic epics all around the internet. Unfortunately, before they could write like that, all of those people first

A copy of This Year [implied colon I guess] 365 Songs Annotated, by John Darnielle. A little decorated oval to the right side further informs: A Book Of Days. It’s a hardcover book with a black dust jacket and white lettering in all caps with a font bordering on baroque. Photographed on the little table where I had a turkey sandwich for lunch and I fucking hope there were no crumbs left there, shit I better go move it

“Vice in the corkscrew wig of pleasure.” A poem by Michelle Chan Brown.
MARRIAGE

Not the python, or the python's
vertebrae exhumed from unassuming
brick. Not the hound asleep
by the scissored-through
narcissus. Not relics but erasures.
Not treasures but facts.

Beyond, the permissive desert.
Vice in the corkscrew wig of pleasure.
Benefactress of champagne,
concubine of a Dionysius
with so few oysters
suctioning his brain.

Violet wallpaper spanning centuries
over rabbits, entrapped.
Our lips, too, in hostage,
under a baroque frame
outside the terrorists' powder room.
Not the rook on the chessboard.

Not the X-acto in the apple.
After merry-making, the stubborn broom.
Our stockpile, dazzled by flies.
All along, all along it was you.
The flesh in the celebrity.
The celebrity, in the flesh.

🔄 {𝗮𝙅𝙎𝘿} My notes about the article… ⤵
{𝗮𝙅𝙎𝘿} My notes about the article…
What is Raw Story Actually Alleging?
Raw Story’s piece does not add much new reporting of its own; it mainly amplifies a NOTUS article by Reese Gorman along with some quotes from Republican sources gloating about their strategy.1,2 The core allegation is that the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) ❝planted❞ favourable polls and generated buzz in progressive circles to lure Rep. Jasmine Crockett into the Texas Senate Democratic primary, believing she would be the easiest opponent to beat.1‑3
According to this telling, Republicans first fielded a poll that included Crockett and showed her leading in a hypothetical Democratic primary. They then pushed that result to the press and allies, after which nonpartisan pollsters began testing her as well.2 GOP operatives then seeded those polls ❝aggressively❞ into progressive digital spaces, and even used calls and texts to encourage Democratic voters to pressure Crockett to run.2,3 The Raw Story framing leans toward a puppet-master narrative: Republicans identify their preferred ❝weak❞ Democrat and then successfully manipulate that person into a statewide campaign.
What Does the Underlying Reporting Actually Show?
The underlying NOTUS piece is more careful than Raw Story’s headline implies. It relies heavily on one anonymous Republican operative ❝with knowledge of the process❞ who describes a ❝sustained effort❞ by the NRSC to promote Crockett as a candidate.2 That source says:
The NRSC ran a July poll including Crockett that showed her as the leading Democrat.
After seeing that result, they decided to ❝disseminate this far and wide❞ and share the numbers with donors and media.2
Following that, other pollsters began including Crockett and found similar patterns.2,4
NRSC allies pushed those polls into progressive digital spaces and organized calls and texts to high-propensity Democrats urging them to encourage Crockett to run.2,3
Crucially, NOTUS notes that Crockett herself said in her launch speech that ❝the more [she] saw the poll results,❞ the more she felt compelled to jump in.2 That supports at least part of the story: polling clearly mattered to her decision.
The NOTUS newsletter follow-up frames this as a fairly standard form of ❝primary meddling,❞ explicitly noting that Democrats have used similar tactics to help weaker Republicans win primaries.3 Other outlets such as The New Republic and The Hill echo the basic facts —that Republicans are taking credit for having boosted Crockett and that they see her as a ❝gift❞ in a general election— while varying the level of scepticism they show toward GOP bragging.4‑6
There is, however, no hard documentary evidence in public (emails, contracts, call scripts, FEC filings) proving the full extent of the alleged ❝AstroTurf recruitment process.❞ It is mostly an anonymous operative boasting to a friendly reporter, plus circumstantial alignment with Crockett’s own polling-focused explanations.
Does this Amount to a Conspiracy, Or Just Hardball?
On the spectrum from ❝nothingburger❞ to ❝deep conspiracy❞, the available evidence looks a lot more like standard-issue electoral hardball than some uniquely baroque plot. Parties have long tried to shape the opposing primary by:
commissioning and publicizing polls that highlight a preferred rival,
using paid or organic messaging to boost that person’s visibility with the other side’s base, and
quietly encouraging activists to rally behind a candidate seen as easier to beat.
The NOTUS piece effectively describes exactly that kind of operation, with the NRSC source openly analogizing it to routine recruitment and support efforts — just pointed at ❝very vulnerable Democrats❞ instead of strong Republicans.2,3 Conservative commentators have immediately drawn parallels to Claire McCaskill’s 2012 effort to boost Todd Akin in Missouri, which is widely understood as a classic example of this tactic.5
The conspiratorial feel in Raw Story’s framing comes from three moves:
❝Planted polls❞ language — It implies that polls themselves were fabricated or illegitimate. In reality, there is nothing inherently suspicious about a party committee fielding internal polls with a wide range of hypothetical candidates and then selectively publicizing favourable results.2 That’s spin, not fraud.
Strong causality claims from thin evidence — The notion that Republicans singlehandedly ❝lured❞ Crockett into the race overstates the evidence. Crockett had already been talked about as a rising star and had publicly mused about a Senate run in light of polling that showed her as a frontrunner; those polls were reported by outlets like Latin Times and AOL weeks before her formal announcement.7 Her
decision clearly rested on more than one NRSC poll and a few seeded stories.
Implied coordination across ❝nonpartisan pollsters❞ — The fact that other pollsters began including Crockett after NRSC’s initial poll is consistent with normal media dynamics: once a candidate’s name shows up in one high-profile survey and public chatter, others add that person to their questionnaires.2,4 It does not prove those pollsters were ❝planted❞ or secretly directed by Republicans.
In short: Republicans almost certainly exploited an opening —Crockett’s rising profile and appetite for data— by elevating polls that made her look strong and amplifying them in spaces where she’d see them.2,3 That’s manipulative, but it is not obviously a clandestine conspiracy so much as weaponized publicity.
How Strong is the Case that Crockett Was ❝Lured❞?
There are three distinct claims here, with different levels of evidentiary support:
Republicans wanted Crockett as the opponent and tried to help her into the race
This is well supported. NRSC insiders are on record, albeit anonymously, saying they saw her as an easy target and deliberately pumped up polls and buzz around her.2‑4 Republican media figures and Trump himself have been gloating that her candidacy is a ❝gift,❞ reinforcing the idea that they see strategic value in her nomination.6
Republican efforts significantly shaped the information environment around Crockett
This is plausible and partly corroborated. We have:
the NRSC poll itself and subsequent public polls that showed her competitive or leading in a Democratic primary,2,4
