β€žI will light candles this Christmas, candles of joy despite all the sadness, candles of hope where despair keeps watch.” – Howard Thurman Good morning to the 2nd Sunday in Advent. The 2nd light stands for peace. #ArtAdventCalendar #Advent #photography #PhotographersOfBluesky #EastCoastKin
Candles entered Christmas traditions from pre-Christian pagan solstice rituals in ancient Europe, where flames symbolized the sun’s return, warded off darkness and evil, and celebrated renewal during the darkest time of year. Christians adapted these practices in the Middle Ages, associating large candles with the Star of Bethlehem and Jesus as the β€œLight of the World,” while German Lutherans placed them on Christmas trees from at least the 16th century.
The Advent wreath originated in 1839 when Lutheran pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern crafted one at a Hamburg orphanage using a cartwheel with 24 small candles for weekdays and four large ones for Sundays to help children anticipate Christmas. It simplified to four candlesβ€”one lit each Advent Sunday representing hope, peace, joy, and loveβ€”and spread among German Protestants by the early 20th century, with Catholics adopting it from 1925 in Cologne and wider use after World War II.
Regional customs enhanced the symbolism, such as Irish Catholics lighting window candles during penal times to guide Mary, Joseph, and Jesus or signal safe Mass, a practice carried to America, and Polish or Greek Orthodox burning candles on Christmas Eve for enlightenment. Overall, Advent wreaths gained popularity in German homes and churches in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, reaching North America via Lutheran immigrants in the 1930s to become a global emblem of anticipation.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 6 #FlowerReport: From San Jose, California, on Monday.
A macro close-up photo of a purple Morning Glory flower. The ridges of the petals as they curve into the center divot are very pronounced. Three anthers rising outward look like white scrubbing brushes, and the fourth one (in the middle) is like a puffy white cloud made out of a dozen beads.

Dogs are real fun subjects for trying out different perspectives taking pictures. Like making a long dog look even longer #ArtAdventCalendar Day 6
A small black dachshund with brown eyebrows and mouth grabs a pink and green alien toy while sideyeing the white woman’s hand that is pulling on it. The framing of the photo makes the dog’s nose look extra large and his body extra long.

It's somehow already Sunday and day 7 of the #ArtAdventCalendar Vector artwork from 2020, created on Illustrator. This was actually my first "big" pieces of merchandise and one of my faves! Sadly one of the many files I've lost the OG artwork for after my laptop switch where files corrupted πŸ₯²
An illustration of a shaker charm. It's made to look like a full jar of honey with a honey comb in it. The four bees inside are the smaller shaker bits inside of the charm.

#ArtAdventCalendar time! It's snowing again but I can hardly believe it's winter so I come bearing one of my favorite autumnal pieces. Sasquash. Watercolor and ink.
Watercolor painting in warm golds and reds contrasting with cool purples of a creature that looks like some kind of anthro pumpkin striding through an oak forest at sunset. There are a lot of abstracted textures in it. The composition takes itself more seriously than it probably should.

Calappa, a dome-shaped crab in dark color, seen from the front. Behind its body and in front, hiding its claws and most of its face, are phalaenopsis, moth orchids with roughly circular shape, in lighter colors. Black and white drawing.

A wide angle closeup photograph of a bronze donkey statue's face and neck. The photo is in black and white. The donkey, named Artie, is the only exhibit you can touch at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Spots along Artie's body show complete wear from nearly a century of being touched by museum visitors. He is on display to show the effects of touching artwork and I can personally say it's a good way to remember that lesson.

Years ago I took a photo of a reflection of myself in a print done by my sister-in-law. The photo always reminded me of a pointillist painting. Early in the Covid pandemic I turned it into an actual painting. The pause of the pandemic allowed me time for visual art. #ArtAdventCalendar #Day5
A pointillist painting of the silhouette of a woman reflected in the glass of a framed print on a wall. A cat is on its home legs on the bed next to her and has its paws on the woman's back.
