Speaking of πŸ“– club, I did read Cat's Cradle super late, which I think was the December read? Figured I may as well because I am underread when it comes to Vonnegut in general. There were some funny bits in that one too, of course. 🧊

I was reading that there are no movie versions of β€œCat’s Cradle” because it’s felt to be unadaptable. For everyone who just finished reading it, how do you feel about this? 🧊

I’m actually glad I started and read as far as it did. It just felt too depressing to push on, which actually may say something about the power of Vonnegut as a writer. 🧊

Finished reading β€œCat’s Cradle” and enjoyed it. The three befuddled children wrestling with their father’s legacy reminded me of β€œSuccession.” The story unfolded in an unexpected way, as the narrator slowly became the main protagonist. No one steps up when a hero is required. Man destroys all. 🧊

I don’t think I hated it as much as everyone else. It reminded me of a cheesy 30’s horror film. If one were to read another Vonnegut, what would you recommend? 🧊

Oh well, it wasn’t as good as I remembered but I do like the notion of a karass 🧊

So I got through Chapter 111 in Cat’s Cradle, and I thought β€œI really don’t want to read any more.”, so I didn’t. 🧊

Finished. There are some things I miss about the Cold War (really) but its apocalyptic literature is not one of them. I’m not much of a fan of modern apocalyptic literature either but at least it tends toward post-apocolypse civilizations that survive. 🧊

Well that's done. I'm so, so glad I didn't read it on my own. 🧊

Haven't started reading yet, but a chapter called "Mona Thanks Me," coming from this toolbox, does not bode well. 🧊

I finally got caught up! Just in time for a depressing coda tomorrow. What an extremely cynical book. I remembered it as being so, but it’s really darker than I remembered. Are the most fervent idealists also the most acerbic cynics because their visions are so lofty they can only be disappointed? 🧊

It's interesting to note the difference between the way sexual and non-sexual violence are treated in Cat's Cradle. There's a lot of detail about the latter, all the explosions and pillars falling etc, but I had to re-read the rape scene to make sure it even happened, it was so hand-wavy. 🧊

Welp. Definitely disappointed in my second read of cats cradle - disappointed in my younger self? Disappointed in Kurt? I dunno. Coulda done without the rape scene and the racist language. But, maybe, that was the point? 🧊

On Ch. 102, so I think I'm only a day behind now. Anyone else find the albatross symbolism a leetle heavy-handed? 🧊

Minton’s speech in Cat’s Cradle is definitely the authorial voice. I’ve cut Vonnegut a lot of slack in this novel because I know his heart is in the right place (and I can’t imagine living through the bombing of Dresden). I get why people loved this novel - for the ideas and the humor. But I don’t.🧊

🧊 ps: This is the first book I’ve read on my phone which I’ve wanted to make habit of for a while. I think the short chapters and overall length made it particularly well suited, but I feel like readable fiction generally could work. Any suggestions for books to try on the small screen?
