Essentially, the UK is a normal country with normal problems. It does some things better, others worse. If it thinks it’s an exceptional country with exceptional virtues and vices, it will do exceptionally stupid things. 1/

All this stuff about Britain is broken, all is terrible, there is no recourse, society is falling apart, if there was a war nobody would go, etc is beginning to irritate me. There are doubtlessly considerable problems. But I worry that the catastrophizing could turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Getting a tour of Hiroshima’s peace park from a survivor of the A-bomb is a fantastic reminder - as if it’s needed - of the horror of war and untamed technology.

Late contribution to size of the state discourse… I think George Osborne’s most enduring failure was that he didn’t actually shrink what the state does, he just made it far worse at doing it.

Energy efficiency is the unsung hero of Europe’s industrial competitiveness. Without efficiency gains since 2000, industry would use 1/3 more energy—costing tens of billions more every year. It’s not just energy prices that matter, but how smartly we use energy.

It's almost as if renewables+storage have the underrated benefit of giving us a risk hedge against natural gas volatility.

The WSJ didn't include the reason in their headline. Must not have had space. I fixed it.

Original headline: Your electric bill is rising faster than inflation. Here's why. Addition: Natural gas prices.

🌲Ed Sheeran explains to Louis Theroux that he dislikes private jets and prefers trains because "I like the environment, I like trees." We know that this type of messaging from celebrities is hugely impactful. We need far more of this from more stars. As posted by @nowthisimpact.bsky.social

A must read report on transport decarbonisation in the UKšŸ‘‡ Balanced, identifying where there is cause for positivity, but describes a credibility gap in gov plans to deliver mode shift to active travel & public transport and no engagement with travel demand reduction despite its benefits.

Everything about this scene is such a perfect encapsulation of this benighted moment in which we have found ourselves

This is far from the public’s priority for transport investment and every Ā£ spent here is not being used to deliver projects that would really make a difference to people’s daily journeys and undermining goals to get more stuff moving by rail. Disappointing.

A key advantage of electrification is we'll get to say goodbye to the calamitous effects of precarious oil prices, which go haywire every time a pariah state bombs another country.
Israel’s attacks on Iran are already hurting global oil prices, and the impact is set to worsen

Israel’s attacks on Iran are already hurting global oil prices, and the impact is set to worsen

Despite not relying on Iran for its oil supplies, petrol and other prices in Australia will rise due to the global impact of the Israel–Iranian war.
