Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like if a US exchange student in a foreign country (say, Turkey?) was imprisoned for six weeks because they wrote an op-ed in the student newspaper it would be a huge domestic story and an international incident.

What we witnessed was a political kidnapping of an elected official and I don't know what more to say than that.

OK, I’m told the feds released Mayor Barka rather than holding him over the weekend on the pretext they couldn’t get him before a judge. I am pleasantly surprised, through I suspect the decision was made on a lower level and that the people who made it may suffer.

I was panicked that my 7-year-old might freak out during the face melting scene in Indiana Jones but she said "I guess he shouldn't have opened that" as seriously as possible and I've been crying laughing for 10 minutes

Wow, I found a Scarlet Tanager this evening! This is maybe a once a year bird for me. So exciting. 🪶
A bright red bird with black wings and a light tan beak. He is perched on a thin branch facing right with forest canopy behind him.

I'll just take this moment to point out that the US Institute of Peace, just a few weeks ago, contained one of the finest concentrations of US expertise on India and Pakistan, and crisis management in South Asia.

The House spent a whole week on Gulf of America and Senate Republicans won’t even bring it to the floor for a vote. Another productive week for the Republican Congress.

NEW: RĂĽmeysa Ă–ztĂĽrk's attorney Mahsa Khanbabai confirms ICE improperly tried to make her wear an ankle monitor: "Despite an 11th hour attempt to delay her freedom by trying to force her to wear an ankle monitor, RĂĽmeysa is now free and is excited to return home, free of monitoring or restriction."

Here's Judge Sessions's written order for Rümeysa Öztürk's release. We haven't yet seen confirmation that she's been released—I'll certainly update you as soon as it appears! storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

ORDER
The Court held a telephonic conference with counsel for
Petitioner and counsel for Respondent at 4:50pm. The Court
reaffirmed its ruling made at the bail hearing earlier on
5/9/25. In light of the Court's finding of no risk of flight and
no danger to the community, Petitioner is to be released from ICE custody immediately on her own recognizance, without any
form of Body-Worn GPS or other ICE monitoring at this time.
Petitioner is not subject to any travel restrictions.
Respondent's counsel shall submit proposed conditions of release
after conferring with ICE no later than 5/12/2025.
DATED at Burlington, in the District of Vermont, this 9th
day of May 2025.

Newsom: I’ll give you a specific example: just this morning, in anticipation of meeting with Chinese counterparts in Geneva, he decided to negotiate against himself—the great negotiator—from 145% tariffs imposed on China, now he says, “Well, maybe it should be 80%.”

There was a moment when movies (rather than novels) took over as the primary form of fiction in our culture. At some point we’ll all need to admit that YouTube videos have taken the non-fiction mantle.

To me, the fact that they arrested him in the course of doing his work as Mayor is more chilling than being arrested at a protest. If they are arresting the Mayor of the city, then we're even worse off.

This is such an excellent point and media should be reporting it this way. (This is in reference to Miller’s preposterous but still dangerous claim earlier today about the executive branch considering suspending the writ)

The headline is deeply misleading. You can’t suspend habeas corpus just “for migrants.” As we’ve seen, ICE will pick *anyone* up. If you have legal status but no right to habeas corpus, you’ll have no ability to challenge your detention or deportation. Suspension for some is suspension for all.
