You have found an old moss-covered stump in the woods filled with mysterious little love notes folded like paper airplanes and written in red ink. You think they might be for you.
Naked
I climbed the cutting mountains
I scraped my palms
There
On the cold and heartless stone
I left traces of my blood in the snow and ice
Now I cannot make a fist to fight my demons
For the scars keep my hands always open
I can only hold them out
And beg for freedom and warmth

Once I was
Giving myself to someone
Letting them take and take
Until there was nothing left
But a dry and cracking shape
Now I spend all my days with you
Our love pouring and pouring over us
And pooling at our feet
Until birds come and drink
Shaking their little wings in delight
π
Itβs ok to want your parents to love you
To ache for it like your chest is falling open
Thirty years later
Itβs ok to have a text conversation with your mother
And feel like you would die
For her to tell you she loves you
And mean it
π
I touch my heart but there is only a flower there
A many-petaled one
I must protect her
So that the one i love can breathe deeply
And be comforted
π
Stop these words
Stop the words that cut and burn
Put your fingers to your mouth to stop them and see your lover get distracted by your lips
And leap into their arms
Do that
Do that tonight instead

Donβt you wonder
What it would be like
Not to trip over sudden roots and land
Dirt and leaves ground into your cheek
Boot prints on your belly
Tangled branches blotting out the sky?
If your poem
Doesnβt make any sense
Why did you lay it here
On the table of the damned
We are starving for poetry
Parched
Hollow
Crawling from post to post like the dying
We need meaning like you would not believe
Give us a poem
We can understand
Keep us alive one more hour

The blackberry bushes along the ditches
Are verdant in their ardor for life
Hungry for the sunshine over the highway
When the cars finally stop coming
The briars will take over
In under a year the roads will be impassable
And the bees will have them
The bees will have us all

There was a door of oak
Into which was carved your face
But I did not open this door
Nor did I open the door of hard steel
Your name etched in it again and again
No
I opened the door of soft golden pine
With a window of sea glass
And hinges of birdsong
I liked it
And
You are behind every door
π
If there existed a secret library
Dusty and silent
Soft green light filtered through windows long ago covered with ivy
I would know
He would have found me there
Awaiting only his touch on my spine
Falling gently open to a page
Written a thousand years ago
And describing exactly
His eyes
π
I just told my boyfriend
That when I see him
I am going to be like a little hedgehog
But also like
A dead jellyfish on the beach
And he still wants to see me
So if you are wondering if there is true love in this world
Ask the hedgehogs
Or the beach
For I will be too busy kissing
To answer
π
Sometimes
When I see the world
I bleed love
And it drips down my body to the dirty street
For instance
Did you know that coconut water
Is so perfect for the human body
That you can put it straight into your veins
This man
Breaking coconuts with a machete
And they bleed love
That was made for you
π
How about this
Iβll keep thinking of things to say
Things that are not
Heartbreaking
And you just cling to me
Humming something
Anything
And then we can switch
And together we wonβt drown
At least not tonight
#LittleLovePoems
The way you gently hold my waist
To guide me through a door
Because Iβm so distracted by your body
I canβt remember how to get out of an elevator

When you are young
You think you are in love
And the birds settle in the evening trees and laugh at you
And then love finally comes like morning light
And you are a bird
π
Sometimes
When I walk the world
It is so perfect that it breaks my heart
And i bleed love
For instance did you know that coconut water
Is so perfect for your body
That it can replace IV fluid
This man
Breaking coconuts with a machete
And they bleed love
That was made for you

The children and I walked the fence of his self loathing
Leaned into the barbed wire until our skin was torn and cut
Then sat down in the dry wind and bled into the golden grass
The sun moved slowly west but nothing changed
So when night fell we crawled under on our bellies and were gone

If you popped by for tea
If you came over right now
You could tell that we both wore black last night
By the trail of discarded clothing
Beginning at the door and extending to every piece of furniture he bent me over
π
Iβm trying to get out the door
Really I am
But I keep ending up in bed
And anyway
Where are my clothes
All I can seem to find is
These sheets
Your body
My tongue
Again and again and again
π
