As I said, censorship of Black, queer and other marginalized users (this doesn’t even include the rise of anti-Palestinian sentiment) and hate speech is thriving.
The limited features that were available which shielded folks from violence are disappearing and a culture of violence is the norm.

The Algorithm, Apparently Chronological
A German court has explicitly named Mastodon and Bluesky as positive examples of social networks that could retain hosting protection. It gets Bluesky’s feeds wrong, but its reasoning about user control might be more useful than it realises.

As for tips: don't rely on monetizing your contributions directly. It rarely works, and chasing it warps why you're even contributing to open source and communities in the first place.

And to be clear: I do love building this and building this on atproto. So whatever pays the bills in the future, I will continue this 100%.
I'm here because I enjoy learning, building and the journey. If I was doing this to get paid I should have stopped in week 1 😅

So far these projects aren't that either (yet, who knows).
Since being laid off, part of my motivation is self-education, skill expansion (and I've learned TONS building this) and keeping myself up-to-date and (hopefully) employable. 🤞

How I earn a living: from 2009-2025 that was a regular job. And the open-source and community work sat alongside it, always unpaid.
It fed my career, the skills + network + reputation that led to those jobs, but before 2021 I never saw it as my main job.

For me, community participation has always been more like "career infrastructure" or "personal branding", but not a product I sell.
I'd love atproto to pay my mortgage and groceries one day 😅, but wanting that and having a model for it are two very different things...

It eventually led to me being hired as Global Business & Technology Evangelist at a Berlin tech startup at which I had an amazing time for over 4 years.
But it took over a decade to get there.

If you're on the fence about signing up: Sifa runs on atproto, so your profile lives in your own PDS, not locked inside our DB. Lexicons/SDK are open too.
Even if Sifa (or I) disappeared tomorrow, your data doesn't vanish. Also the whole reason I like building on atproto.

Will Sifa ever be monetised? IDK yet, there's no revenue model today. If/when it comes it has to be one that doesn't betray the whole point: no hoarding your data, no lock-in.
I do (naively?) think that first building a solid, open foundation that gets traction will benefit it in the long term
