A NOIR MASTER REDISCOVERED

She had the resourcefulness of the mother, the domestic woman, accustomed to emergencies. - Elisabeth Sanxay Holding, The Blank Wall

As vitally contemporary as THE DEEP END feels, writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel found their inspiration for the riveting tale from a little-known 1940s novel: The Blank Wall, written by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding. Like Jim Thompson and other noir writers before her, Holding's powerful tales of unremitting nightmares - in her case centered around women characters -- are just now being rediscovered.

When she first burst onto the scene in the '40s, Holding was celebrated by no one less than Raymond Chandler, who said: "For my money, she is the top suspense writer of them all ... her characters are wonderful; and she has a sort of inner calm that I find very attractive." Holding seemed to have an innate understanding that true heart-stopping suspense emerges not just from murders and mysteries but from the fabric of ordinary life. She wrote with searing honesty about women, marriage and motherhood. The New York Times enthused about Holding's characters: "With the best intentions in the world, [they] quietly wreck each other's lives."

First time watch for me and it wasn’t half bad. Not sure it belongs in the holiday canon but given the lack of true Thanksgiving centric films it is likely graded on a curve. #FilmSky boxd.it/bMAMgD

A holiday blind spot for me.  Not too shabby.  I know it was drug aided by Downey, Jr. was totally unhinged and hilarious.

Movie: King Richard (Netflix) This was actually a sweet movie. Regardless of how Richard Williams is as a person in reality, we should all know by now how Hollywood biographies go and as a Hollywood biography, this was great. I say that as someone who doesn't enjoy tennis. #filmsky

WICKED: FOR GOOD - Jon M. Chu’s continuation of the beloved musical is a bit of a minor downgrade, trading its stagy pizzazz for a more dark & grim tone. Both Erivo & Grande are still remarkable regardless, and even with blatant fan service, it’s still enjoyably entertaining nonetheless. #filmsky

Long Walk is a tidy movie. Not “enjoyable” but solid. Highly encourage watching it on a treadmill (how I watch most movies these days, unfortunately) www.imdb.com/title/tt1037...

This film is darker than the first one, both in tone and color palate (though there are still scenes bursting with color). It digs deeper into the themes of friendship, the consequences of choices, oppression of marginalized groups, authoritarianism and the tendency for people to...⬇️ #filmsky 📽️

Splitting movies in half is always a dicey idea. Does WICKED: FOR GOOD buck the trend by delivering the goods or is it another case of sloppy seconds? I'll tell you in my spoiler-free review: aisleseat.com/wicked-for-g... #WickedForGood @ofcs.bsky.social #filmsky
